Puppy doesn’t like walking from the house

We have a 17 week Labrador pup who has an aversion to waking from the house. Will happily walk when we drive elsewhere but very reluctant when walking from home. Have tried treats to coax, encouraging, allowing lots of sniffing, taking out time etc

Walking in country parks is lovely but sometimes a quick walk round the block is needed. Any tips or advice gratefully received!

Have you tried carrying it a small way away from the house ? Then you would gradually reduce the distance from the house

We just carried our lab a 100m or so from the end of the driveway, she'd walk happily from there. She grew out of it quite quickly.

Carry her around the corner.

In my limited, to be fair, experience, it will pass! My one was the same but now he is an old bugger and if I deviate from his normal walk, he will just sit down and refuse to walk :-)

Great suggestions about carrying her/him for a bit!

Thanks so much for the replies. We have carried him, but he’s getting to be quite the chunk now.

weirdly, he has actually walked fine this morning and I took him for a little walk at lunch too. Didn’t want to come in!

good to know it will probably pass

My pup was the same at the same age and totally grew out of that.
I remember being nervous because we were supposed to go to the BIG CITY together a few weeks later and I was like "how is he going to cope if he's scared of leaving the garden".
3 weeks later he was trotting in Paris like he lived there all his life, I don't know why he was scared of leaving the house, but whatever it was, he forgot about it!

Don't force him, do baby steps according to his confidence, and loads of praises. He was maybe spooked here one day by something and just needs to understand that it's perfectly safe.

It will, honestly! Puppies go through lots of little developmental phases and it's easy to think "shit, this is a real problem" but 99% of them solve themselves as the dogs grow and become more confident :)

My 17 week Italian greyhound is exactly the same! She’s tiny though so it’s not such an issue weight wise bu I’m looking forward to the time she will happily skip out for a walk.

Can you doing it in small stages. Ie. Walk two or three steps, reward pup, then walk home, then turn around, walk a few steps again, reward, then turn around.etc Build it up extending the distance day by day.

Thanks so much for all the responses. Luckily working from home, I can pop out with him several times a day. I’m sure he’ll get there
