Just found a claw!

Just found a claw on the floor - have checked dogs paws and it appears to be from her back leg dew claw. It's not bleeding and the claw looks to have come off cleanly - not sure how?!
Obviously it's a bank holiday so I'm hoping to avoid an expensive out of hour vet trip.... dog seems fine and is not licking it, she's sleeping after being out for a long walk this morning.
What should I do? Should I wash it and bandage it? I have metacalm in as she has just finished antibiotics and treatment for an unrelated lump so I can give her some of that.

How do her other nails look? Any of them ‘lifting’? Hopefully some random one-off and not the start of Systemic Lupoid Onychodystrophy - but unfortunately, that’s what it was with my dog.

She should be fine for vet’s tomorrow if it’s not bothering her, but I would bandage it to keep it clean.

No shes fine, it's quite natural, no treatment needed

Aria20 · 28/08/2023 14:53

@Sarvanga38 the rest look normal I think - she has black claws and black furry paws so to be honest can be hard to tell! Just looked on your link that problem sounds awful so hopefully it's nothing serious like that!

She wasn't even offlead today and didn't appear to catch her paw at all so no idea how this has happened?!

My old dog used to snip his dewclaws himself.

Some dogs will bite/rip their own claws off.

tabulahrasa · 28/08/2023 19:53

If she’s fine then I wouldn’t do anything, it’s basically a broken nail.

They can break them so they need the vet, but there’d be blood and an obvious issue if that was the case.

Aria20 · 28/08/2023 21:11

She's 2.5 and she's never done it before! I have wrapped a bandage on it incase and I'll see how she gets on. Thanks for the replies.

If it's not bleeding and the dog isn't bothered, I'd leave it. My two nibble off their dew claws when they get long, so perhaps your dog does the same?
