Alternative chews to Buffalo horn…

DDog now 11 months, has loved buffalo horns as chew toys. However I don’t like the way they splinter, we change them regularly. Can anyone recommend anything else? She wants to chew something all the time!

Cow hooves are good and very cheap.
I like yak sticks but they don’t last as long.

Bully sticks from Just for Pets are good and really long lasting. Not cheap though, about £12 each. Yak chews too but mine goes through phases of liking these and then ignoring them for ages!

Mine likes pizzle sticks and yak chews

Have you tried antler? Can’t say I’ve noticed any splintering…

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 27/08/2023 23:48

Ostrich bones

DailyDriver · 28/08/2023 07:36

What sort of dog. Ostrich bones and antlers are the only things that will last multiple days for my labs. Pizzle sticks and yak chews can be gone in half an hour and I just don't have that sort of budget!

Crabbity · 28/08/2023 22:03

We like lamb horns too but can also theoretically splinter, hasn’t happened yet though.

Stag bar/antler - we've not had any issues with splintering

Yes have to say ddog is only 7kg so a pizzle stick can last a couple of days. Look up coffee wood chew. These were recommended to me by a lab owner and ours is still going strong months later

Jack's Pantry on FB.you can get all sorts of animal bits sent to you, all natural and safe, you can tell her age and breed of your dog too so you don't get anything harmful.

I too was going to say deer antlers. Ours is only a small, 6kg poodle X, but no splintering at all and its lasted months.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 29/08/2023 12:26

I had a 15kg dig and now have a 4kg dog. The deer antler is still going strong after about 6 years!
Cow hooves also good and last a long time. Bit stinky though……..

HateTheView · 29/08/2023 13:10

Cow hooves are good but smell like a farm yard!! Can fill with food and freeze too. Then give frozen for an extra treat.

Antlers are good too. My lab can get through a massive bill pizzle pretty quickly.

lampformyfeet · 29/08/2023 13:15

Please don’t use antlers. They cause slab fractures of the carnassial teeth which is incredibly painful. Treatment is surgical extraction or root canal. Some insurance policies don’t cover anything dental so it could be expensive.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 29/08/2023 15:06

Unfortunately lots of people don't see the risk in antlers or horns. I'd never give either - mine is a really powerful chewer and I'd worry about damaged gums or broken teeth.
