Dog's being weird

Went for a walk earlier and dog went into ultimate sniffer dog mode. He was running in zigzags across the field with his nose to the ground & then sniffed all the way home. When we got back he wouldn't settle, kept whimpering and pacing. Ended up taking him out 2 more times and the same thing - frantic, tugging on the lead, nose to the ground. I thought he might lead me to a child trapped down a well, but he didn't. It's 2 hours later now and he's only just starting to calm down! & it's taken lots of attention, treats, toys etc.

Why's he being weird?

My Goldie is pretty lazy and just plods but he gets excited if he gets a sniff of either of those

We had beagles years ago. When the male dog got the scent of a bitch in season he howled for about 3 days. Good luck. 😂

Oh god! He hasn't settled either. He conned us and soon as we went upstairs started barking and howling out the window 😩

Be prepared for him to refuse to eat and get an upset tummy.

Only thing that cured mopey teen/lovesick dog was having our boy fixed......

My normally obedient dog who won't leave my side, once ran out of the park and down the middle of the road after similar sniffing. I assumed it was a bitch in season.

Crikey, no one told us about this! Well 3 hours in & he seems to have tired himself out. Probably dreaming about her & humping his special cushion. Will keep him on the lead tomorrow!!

They don’t grow out of it either, mine put his back out at 8 years old on a bank holiday Monday chasing after his girlfriend (neighbours collie). That was an expensive vet bill.

@Blackcloids my neutered male still perks up if he picks up the scent on a walk, but the howling in the kitchen for her to come get him , has thankfully stopped.

My neutered dog would still be interested in a bitch in season but the frantic sniffing and getting himself in a complete lather has gone!
