To feel really sad for street dogs.

I've just seen two homeless men sitting on a fence. They were drinking cans and clearly had an alcohol dependence. They each had a dog with them. The dogs looked so sad, curled in a ball on the pavement. I feel so sorry for street dogs like this. It must be a sad life at the mercy of an unpredictable owner. And no warm bed at night.

There is a homeless man around here who drinks throughout the day. His dog (who he is always with) looks very healthy and is incredibly bonded to him from what I can tell. I never feel sorry for it, I think it is far happier than dogs, say, left alone in a crate all of a working day. I don't think it's possible to wholly generalise, but I would imagine many dogs of homeless people are very loved and prioritised. Maybe I'm being naive?

@Unluckycat1 yes you're right. You can't generalise. Perhaps it was just the 2 I saw.

I feel sorry them too. There is a homeless man who sits outside my local ASDA with his dog. He is an alcoholic and apparently when he's in a mood he hits the poor dog. I can't challenge him about it as I've never actually seen it happen and I am scared of confronting him. Loads of people stop and talk to him as he's a well known local character. I always buy the dog a sausage and feed it to him directly when I come out of ASDA, instead of giving the man money.

It's so people give them more money. They know a lot of suckers would give money as they feel sorry for the dog whereas they would be less compassionate for him alone.

Very sad that
I give nothing if they have a dog

The most expensive thing in my house is the curtains. If I was made homeless, I would take the dog. Not the curtains.

You lack empathy and emotional intelligence. My brother is like you and it makes me dislike him.

I'm 50/50 on this as dogs are meant to live outside. If I saw someone hit their dog hard though I would call police immediately.
People who beg with dogs I always give the dog not interested in the grown adult that got that way.

They do it because they get more money as people feel sorry for them.

You can kid yourself that they love the dogs more than anything, go without to feed the dog etc but that’s all for show.

I gave out some dog coats in the really cold winter a few years ago and next time I saw them, they had sold/lost the coats and the dogs were shivering again.

They expect free vet care because they won’t pay for it themselves, and get a new dog the minute the old one is no use.

There's a whole gang of them near me that do "shifts" and whoever is "working" gets the dog. I don't think it's particularly badly treated but its definitely used as a prop.
