We have a guinnel running between our terraced house with gates on either end.

I have a small breed puppy so I block the bottom of the gate off with bricks so she can't get through.

Both gates are locked.

The front gate leads onto our garden path

Last night I had to store some items in the guinnel and when I came back out I've locked the gate but not replaced the bricks.

So que pupper coming out this afternoon for a pee and she goes straight under the gate.

It's locked so I can't get to her at all. I'm watching through bars as she runs down the guinnel towards the 2nd gate.

I just shout 'the puppy is getting out of the gate!!' in a panic and by some miracle DH was in the front garden getting something from the car!!

He jumps over a 4 ft fence and grabs her as she goes under the 2bd fence and runs towards to open front gate (even if it was closed she would have gotten underneath)

Not 5 seconds after her grabs her 2 cars go speeding passed.

If he wouldn't have been in the front garden and acted so quickly she absolutely would have been killed by the cars.

I feel sick to my stomach.

I can't believe I did that.

My only solace is we move in a week and our new garden is just brick walls and there's absolutely no way she can get out.

It happened over an hour ago and I still feel a bit dizzy writing this.

How scary

I should add I've previously lost a dog to a car accident so it's doubly stressful :(

Oh gosh that’s so scary, thank goodness your DH was in the right place at the right time.

Only take her out on a lead until you move. Glad she's okay!

Shopper727 · 01/08/2023 16:02

My dog ran right out of our front door and across the busy main road when we moved in, he was on his lead but my son accidentally clipped it on to his name tag - he’s quite fluffy so hadn’t noticed he pulled a bit and off, thankfully he was ok but gives you such a fright. We are extra cautious now but glad your puppy is ok

That sounds very scary. Think of it as a message though. You knew she was small that’s why you put bricks in front of the gate. It’s very easy for accidents to happen.

The reality is though, she’s fine. Give yourself a break and enjoy watching her grow up.

It’s terrible isn’t it. Just learn from it and don’t be too hard on yourself.
FWIW I was once walking my young labrador on a lead on the pavement and he met a beagle to tries to sniff his bum. My dog wags his tail and sits down, then the beagle started barking really loudly and made him jump and he launched into the road. Thank heck he was on a lead - but not a tight one. I yanked him to me just in time. If he’d been on an even looser lead he could have been squashed. I have never forgotten that.

I just don't know how I didn't put the bricks back.
She is asolutely tiny and capable of getting through holes like a rabbit.

I think the worst bit was just watching. I couldn't do a thing to stop her.

I've put a yoga mat down there now with extra bricks so there's no way she can even think of going back there.

I felt like Sarah Paulson in AHS 'the prisoner is escaping!!'
