Puppy chasing the cat

Any tips on how I can stop our 17 week old chasing the cat. So far I have managed to keep them apart with a stair gate but now they are coming face to face. We still have the gate but the cat is becoming braver but puppy chases the cat and the cat swipes. We’ve always had both cat and dogs and they’ve always got along fine.

We had this , it lasted about 3-4 months I'm afraid , it was quite stressful. Now they ignore each other / chase each other / cuddle up together . The cat started swiping back after a bit and the novelty of the chase went a bit dry for the dog 😂

Longline to reinforce the recap or leave or whatever you’re using... means he doesn’t get the chance to chase.

My dachshund used to chase my cat when he was a puppy. The cat was having none of it and would swipe him. At first it made him worse and he'd go into full scale "zoomies" but he soon learned that the cat was the boss. They now get on fine.

Keep the puppy on the lead so it can't physically chase.

The more the pup chases the more they will. It’s fun. My pup is 11 months and still tries to play with the cat if she can but we keep them separated with gates and dividers and it is very slowly improving. You need the cat to be boring so when they are around play and treats with you instead.

Cats sorting it out often end in vets bills.
