Worried had to leave my elderly dog for urgent surgery

My elderly girl (13+) has been admitted for urgent surgery. She has a very nasty ear heamatoma that conservative treatment options failed to solve.
She has been so unhappy all weekend even with serious pain meds and it’s very risky for her to have a GA due to the drugs she has for severe arthritis. I hope she makes it but also know she might not and asked the vet not to attempt any aggressive CPR if she wants to go let her go. Not sure if I will get chance to snuggle on the sofa with her again but I had to give her a chance and try to solve that ear pain.

I am in bits as she has been such a good dog and with me over some of the hardest years of my life and I have had to sign consent forms on the exact day of my parents joint funeral six years ago and I have a funeral I cannot not go to for tomorrow. Dog sitter has been booked for her in hope she makes it and can come home the limbo period of not knowing is so hard.

It's so hard to put our pets through this sort of thing. It sounds like you've done the right thing by your dog and are doing everything you can for him. I hope all turns out well OP.

Her, sorry.

MrsSquirrel · 24/07/2023 11:19

So sorry @triballeader the uncertainty is really hard.

I have an oldie too, mine is 14.

Ah OP, I'm sorry, I know you must be really stressed.

This is a really minor procedure and any risk here is low.
I'm a vet and carry out anaesthetic on senior dogs every day, as these are the dogs who often need anaesthesia (for things like dentals and lump removals).

Hopefully your dog is home and happy very soon.

Thank you all, my old girl is now back home with some fetching plastic surgery style needlework and sponge dressings. She is still zonked but back to wanting to try to play, look for food and try to follow me around like glue. Follow up with her vet on Thursday

Even with good vet care her ear had become so swollen she had completely lost interest in life and that was really worrying to see so it’s lovely to see her staffy smile as she staggers about trying to be a dog again.

Oh bless her, so glad the op sounds like it went well and that she is back home with you.

Thank God. So so happy to read your update. Lots of cuddles and kisses for her

I've only just seen this and peeked for an update. That sounds positive. She's a strong thing and hopefully she'll be feeling like her old self again v soon. Enjoy your cuddles
