Does your dog enjoy being groomed?

Maggie a 4 year old collie doesn't go the groomers. She gets rid of excess fur by moulting (cue our floors needing sweeping daily) and we bath her ourselves.

I wouldn't say she enjoys baths (well she goes in the bath and is showered) but she doesn't object.

Brushing however....she loves it! Because of the moulting we brush her her about 3times a week. She loves it! She seems to find it really relaxing and it almost sends her to sleep. I think it's like a massage for her. (And it gets a satisfying amount of fur from her!)

Does your dog like it?

Our husky who needs it most hates it. Lurchers with no fur to spare love it!

Moanycowbag · 11/07/2023 21:34

My girls doesn't mind being brushed but not with the slicker she doesn't like the slicker, and isn't keen on a bath but she only gets bathed after her bum has been squeezed at the vets (anal glands) or if she's rolled in fox/badger poo, but she needs her feet shaving regularly which she tolerates.

My boy is having puppy grooms at the groomers currently as he is a breed that needs regular grooming but he seems to enjoy it and I have to brush him most days and put in a top knot which he is generally ok with.

My old boy who has passed on used to love a bath, he would grumble and moan in pure bliss of being shampooed and rinsed in warm water, but he hated rain, puddles and would not even entertain having a paddle in any body of water.

LizBennet · 11/07/2023 21:35

Nope, he’s only a Shih Tzu and it’s like wrestling a lion.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 11/07/2023 22:53

They hate it so we keep them short with “puppy cuts” which is not a look I like at all but better than them having a horrid time as they would need daily grooming if we kept them long

Marlaysydney12 · 12/07/2023 06:59

We have a young lab. We don't groom him too extensively but he does seem to like it. He loves jumping into a warm shower. I use a Furminator comb on him a couple of times a week and he enjoys it if he's in the mood to stay still.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 12/07/2023 13:01

Yes, they are a non shedding breed with a top coat and a thick undercoat. They love being brushed by me so I do it most evenings while watching TV. They have very firm boundaries about permitted body parts though, the sensitive inner thigh is firmly off limits 😂.

Darklane · 12/07/2023 16:27

Yes they love it, just as well since they all have long, floor length coats.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 12/07/2023 16:31

We have a beagle so he's pretty low-maintenance.

He goes to the groomers every few months to get his nails trimmed, but otherwise he just gets a bath whenever he's a bit smelly - he doesn't really shed so only gets brushed a few times a year.

I wouldn't say he likes it but he tolerates it well enough.

Libraryloiterer · 12/07/2023 16:34

My short haired cross breed loves it, even the metal flea comb.. but I can only do her outside as clouds of fur go flying everywhere.

Isn't it meant to be an important bonding ritual, in that it reminds them of being groomed by their mothers? 🥺

travelingtortoise · 12/07/2023 16:37

My elderly boy looooves it.

Anything that even vaguely resembles a scratch is his absolute favourite thing – and he takes on a very 'regal' appearance when I groom him; he sits very still, keeps his neck long (for maximum access) and his eyes half-closed.

As soon as I stop, though, his head whips around like he's saying:

"Er... what happened? Why are we not continuing?"

Stomacharmeleon · 12/07/2023 17:06

My 'chug' goes every six weeks at the moment as she is prone to being a bit stinky, does not like me brushing her and is scarily hairy.... have to hoover 2/3 times a day. She is on apoquel (?) due to allergies which doesn't help in the summer!

TakeMyStrongHand · 12/07/2023 18:20

My Akita desperately needs washing but it's like wrestling a bear! Poor thing! He tolerates being brushed but hates me picking out the tufts that he expels twice a year (for 6 months each) during shedding season.

Noeggsontoast · 12/07/2023 18:33

Absolutely every day and they sleep and snore away as I brush them. I get the brush out and the youngest of the two jumps up on the grooming area to get brushed first.

ShakeYourFeathers · 12/07/2023 19:23

She doesn't mind it so long as she's in the mood and treats are involved

She doesn't like the groomer at all, who incidentally loves her and think she's the best .

Floor length coats? Photos? 🙂

Treecreature · 12/07/2023 19:54

I have one that runs towards a brush and one that runs away from them!

thistimelastweek · 12/07/2023 20:02

Nope
I have to sneak up with a treat in one hand and the brush behind my back.

Andywarholswig · 12/07/2023 20:03

My boy doesn’t love it but he’ll tolerate a certain amount brushing. He doesn’t shed, so he needs a good brush most days but we keep him quite short as he loves any kind of water and his coat acts like a giant sponge. Biggest issue at the moment is the sticky grass balls, he loves a rummage through the undergrowth and came out the other day looking like he had green measles. Took me a hour to pick them all out of his coat (picture is half way through!)

Those balls remind me of when we took our dog who was a puppy at the time to France for a camping holiday. The pitch was covered in those bloody things and I spent most of the holiday unpicking them from her

You have my sympathies

Sunflowers765 · 12/07/2023 23:21

My young lab just tries to eat the brush! But he absolutely loves being dried with a towel and when he comes in from the garden with wet paws he lies down and sticks his legs in the air so we can dry his paws! ( and he might get a bit of belly rub too)

shadowchancesassy · 13/07/2023 11:00

Our one year old xl bully loves it, goes every 4 weeks and has been going since he was 12 weeks old

pigsDOfly · 13/07/2023 15:45

Depends what sort of mood she's in.

I have to start with the small brush though, and work up to the bigger brush, which is annoying as the smaller brush doesn't really get close to dealing with her thick coat.

She won't however come into the house after a walk until I've wiped her paws, no idea why as they don't get particularly dirty.

One thing she does love is a good back, shoulder and head massage. She will come and plonk herself in front of me when she's in the mood for a massage.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 13/07/2023 15:55

Our elderly JRT loves a brush, lounges around like a Hollywood starlet at the salon being pampered. She doesn't like having her dew claws clipped so I use an emery board on them, just to add to the spa feeling.

iloveeverykindofcat · 14/07/2023 05:44

He loves to be brushed. He's a rescue and when we had him in February was scared of hands and had only a very thin, pale, scruffy coat. Now he's got a rich luxuriant coat and pushes into the brush like a cat.
