Has anyone got a European passport for their dog??

I've just learnt from a friend - Chinese whispers though - that if you have a friendly vet in - for example - France and a local address you can get a European passport for your dog which saves loads of hassle and the exorbitant fee each trip.

Has anyone done this or know how it works?

We're about to go to Provence and do have a local address we can use ... Love to know how to do it and what you think, as we'll be going back in the autumn too

We looked into it, but for us it wasn't worth it. You need to make sure the passport is kept valid by having rabies vaccines in an eu country. As we only go abroad once a year max then having to time trips relative to rabies vaccination date wasn't worth the cost savings for us. We have a local vet who will do an AHC for 100.

I think if you have multiple trips a year and perhaps live somewhere where it's easy enough to pop across the channel to get your rabies vaccines updated then the benefits are much more clear cut.

Mine have European passports, I live in UK but am irish with Irish vet family members so can’t help with friendly French vet recommendations, sorry.

That's not correct, doing this will invalidate the passport

Hmm, well I have had no problems with having the vaccines updated in the UK. A vaccine is the same regardless of where you get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

UK vets can’t enter rabies vaccines in an EU passport any more so the poster who said you need to get all future rabies vaccines done in the EU is correct.

From clients who have done it you need a permanent address in France where you are registered and pay taxes. You need to see the vet for a rabies vaccine pretty soon after arrival and then apply for the dogs to be registered resident. It does take a while I believe and it's usually done by clients who go for several months at a time so they can wait for the French wheels to turn.
British vets are not allowed to enter rabies vaccines in Eu passports so the annual rabies needs to be done there - in the UK the vaccine is every three years not annual.
