Fruit & veg

DDog has wet food & kibble (plus treats) but never eats any fruit or veg. Looks baffled when I offer it to him. Is this a problem health wise?

Depends on the quality of the food he is having.

The Forever Dog goes into detail on what to add to dog food and the benefits if you fancy reading up about it

Don't put fruit and veg in kibble but put chopped up apple and carrot in his treat ball and he loves frozen banana in his Kong.

BiteyShark · 09/07/2023 09:06

I use veg as an alternative to treats to try and cut down the calories.

I'd like to do the same but he just turns his nose up. He'll have banana in a kong mixed with peanut butter.

Mine loves raw carrot and the inner parts of raw white cabbage.

Other veg he turns his nose up and won't eat anything cooked.

Apples is mixed but a lot of the time he spits it out but still asks for a bit so we offer expecting it to end up in the bin.

If your dog has a good diet otherwise I wouldn't worry.

My lab loves
carrots
cherry tomatoes
sweet pepper
strawberries
raspberries
certain lettuce
water melon
mushrooms
apple
All these as treats in small portions now and then

Thanks @BiteyShark - that's what I need reassurance about 😊

As PP have said, it depends on the quality of his other food as to whether it's necessary, but as a rule, most dogs benefit greatly from eating fresh fruit and vegetables as part of their diet.

Mine has some most days as a treat - this time of year it tends to be apple, red pepper, cucumber, watermelon, strawberries and cherry tomatoes. In winter he'll get things like sweetcorn, sweet potato, roast carrots, peas etc.

The only vegetables my dogs will eat on their own are frozen peas and carrots . They’re on a raw diet so when I make them their food I hide fruit and vegetables chopped finely usually things like apple, blueberries, broccoli. They seem healthy enough.

Fed a good quality food and don't worry about it too much.

But try cooked as well as raw, and in tiny amounts mashed into dinner. Mine will eat any veg cooked but none raw. He started out having things like a spoon of cottage pie filling in his dinner which I make with mince, grated carrots, lentils and peas (and shock horror, onions).
