Parents dog and baby..

My parents Labrador is, in my opinion, out of control. He is generally a loveable dog but he doesn’t listen, lunges at people, destroys household items, that sort of thing.

When I visit with my baby, my parents always make effort to keep the dog in a separate space as he is too boisterous for baby. Naturally, there have been a few occasions when the dog has gotten into the room and he jumps at baby, barks, pulls on her clothes.

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this? I don’t want to let it turn into a situation that’s only rectified when dog ends up hurting baby.

Pulls on her clothes?? I wouldn't let the dog and the baby be in the same house if they couldn't guarantee it stayed in a separate room.

Long term they need to train the dog properly, are they taking steps to do that?

Let them come to your house or meet on neutral ground until they learn how to control the dog . I can’t see that it’s difficult to keep the dog in a different room which implies to me that the accidentally letting the dog in is really deliberate .

Baby does not enter a house which contains the dog.

Baby stays in sling which outside in the company of the dog.

Not up for discussion

I would not go to their home. Somewhere near them, as others above have said but not their house if they can’t keep the dog away every single time.

This really isn’t ok. There is a possibility for your baby to be really hurt. We had Labradors when our kids were born. They were always gentle. They would try and like the baby given half the chance but nothing more than that. We never left them alone with our children when they were little. We always kept them separate when other children came to play when babies, toddlers. Never had an incident where the dogs accidentally got out and met the children.

I wouldn't go there with the baby. Let them come to you - without the dog.

The dog could easily be kept in the room away from your baby with a little bolt to keep the door closed
