Cocking leg

My 3.5 year old neutered make never cocked his leg, always squatted to wee. We just thought that was his thing.

Until last week, now he cocks his leg. He has gone from the middle of the lawn to against a tree.

Anyone know why the change now? He has been full sized adult for 2 years.

No idea but mine did the same thing from about 2.5 years

It is strange to change behaviour when they are adult. Anyone know why this happens?

No idea either but my nearly 4 year old bitch started to cock her leg for a wee when she was about 2. She mixes it up now, sometimes squats and sometimes cocks her leg!

Our boy only cocked his leg when we got a girly dog. Maybe one has moved in nearby?

I thought they learned it from other dogs. Our bitch cocks her leg the majority of the time.

Not sure it could be learnt as we have an older male dog who has always cocked his leg. So you would have thought he would have picked it up before now.

He does have a dog walker so maybe something is different there and that has triggered the change.

I’m not fussed either way just curious as to why now.

My dog had never cocked his leg. But a few years ago he started to kick dirt over his wee/poo area which he had never done before. I assumed he had copied this from another dog (he goes to daycare)

If he goes out with a dog walker I suspect all the male dogs do it there, so he's just copying.

Mine cocks his leg on walks but mostly squats at home.

My female spaniel does cock her leg a bit but this is more of a scenting wee when out, at home she does lady wees.

Our 2 year old lab squats to wee in our garden but cocks his leg in the street. He's a funny little thing. I love him very much.

Mine squat in the garden and cock legs outside. None of mine have started cocking until around eight months old (Labs if it's relevant).

My dog has crap balance so just lifts a foot and still pees in the same place he would if he squatted. Still tries though bless him.

Our male dog always cocks his leg on walks pre and post neutering but has never cocked his leg weeing in the garden he does a kind of standing stretch instead .

My spaniel does that standing stretch thing too. He's nearly 2 and I've never seen him cock his leg, I've often wondered why as I thought all dogs cocked their legs. When he does a poo he just moves to the side for me to pick it up, he's never kicked dirt over it either. It's a relief to know he's not the only one with unusual toilet habits (for a dog).
