A breed similar in temperament to a labrador… but without the shedding

I don’t necessarily think such a paragon of virtue exists… but..

We have had labradors as family dogs for over 15 years, we’ve had three in that time. We still have two- aged 12 and 8.

All three have been very different personalities, however what they have had in common in their absolutely stellar temperament.

Pretty much everything is approached as ‘woohoo!! My favourite thing!’. They love people- their people and new people/strangers. It doesn’t matter if you’re getting up to go to take them for a walk or just nip to the loo- they want to come with you to keep you company and they’ll do it with a big smile on their face.

They have all been uncomplicated- not phased by fireworks, thunder, moving house, changes in routine, being left with house sitters when we rarely go away. They are all good with livestock and smaller animals. They have been beyond amazing with our own children and visiting ones. They are generally very chilled out about life, little phases them, everything is approached with a grin on their face.

Yes, they are HARDWORK as puppies (dear god on occasion they brought me to my knees!). We have had some inevitable damage to things that got chewed, and they were bitey land sharks for a time, but once you’re through the puppy stage they have been complete delights. They want to please/get things right, have been a doddle to train and always had solid recalls, and want to stay close to you on walks (within a few meters/always in sight- no wandering off into the undergrowth after interesting smells).

However…. The hair! My goodness the hair! Our downstairs is hoovered every day, usually twice a day… but within 30 min looks like it’s never been done. It gets ingrained into the carpets upstairs. They sleep in the kids rooms (which we are very happy with and brings great comfort and joy to both parties, so don’t want to change). But bedding is always hairy too, despite being washed at least once per week, often twice.

We have a fairly outdoorsy lifestyle and in the winter they get filthy on walks, and even when just nipping into the garden in the worst of the winter.

We were discussing the other day whether we will get another when (hopefully a very long time from now ☹️) our older dog passes.

I think we probably will go for another Labrador, either from the same breeder, or from very similar lines.

However, it got me thinking, I wonder if there are any other breeds out there that are similar temperament wise, but without the constant shedding, and possibly even a touch smaller? Around the 10-20kg mark rather than 30kg?

Friends have different breeds and having spent time with them, none of them would be a fit for us- too strong a prey drive, too aloof, can be difficult with other dogs, too much grooming required for long coats, breeds predisposed to health problems.

I wouldn’t want any dog (or more to the point encourage the breeding of) that had extreme features, the breeds with squashed faces, or big folds of skin, too long in the back, etc that are detrimental to their health. I am also not interested in mixed breeds, doodles etc for similar ethical reasons. I would want a puppy (as ours were), from fully health tested parents, from an experienced breeder, somehow involved in the breed whether that was working or showing but was breeding with a sense of what they were trying to achieve/improve upon.

Not asking for a lot, eh?! 🤣

i just wondered if there were any other breeds out there we should possibly research.

Many thanks!

Would love an answer to this. My robot vacuum is a necessity with my lab and i'm considering getting another one for upstairs.

JeandeServiette · 30/06/2023 15:30

Miniature schnauzers don't shed and they have some of the same personality traits. Well to a degree, anyway.

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/06/2023 15:31

cairn terrier, mine is 12kg, no shedding, amazing temperament, grew up with them and now my kids are. Quite an adjustment from a lab though, and yes he's a terrier so small furries are a no go in the house,

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/06/2023 15:35

I’m not sure (genuinely) I understand about the ethical issues with a Doodle?
out breeding can help dilute health problems such as hips in labradors and eyes in poodles.
we have a miniature labradoodle from a very thorough breeder, both parents pedigree and full health checks.
she is lovely, and very minimal shedding.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 30/06/2023 15:38

Lagotto?
Or if you can find one, a Curley coated retriever will shed less than a lab

The issues is most breeders of doodles do not health check, they breed purely for demand/people who don’t want a dog that sheds.

Outcrossing can reduce issues if done very carefully but not if you’re just producing a genetic clusterfuck to line your pockets.

The man who “invented” the doodle very famously said this year it is the worst regret of his life.

Airedale terrier, they need to be clipped but they don't shed. We have two and I only hoover once a week.

They have fabulous personalities, comical, inquisitive, friendly, gentle. And a similar size to a Labrador but with lower exercise requirements.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 30/06/2023 15:39

We've got a lurcher that is a lab/whippet cross and she doesn't really shed. Doesn't bark much either. She's not quite as good with other dogs as maybe a lab or rather she is but she does the hound bitey face stuff so they don't like her! She adores people though, super cuddly and gentle.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/06/2023 15:43

@Lastqueenofscotland2 , thank you, that makes sense.
TBF, as above, we carefully sourced our doodle from a good breeder and could see multi generational ancestry.
our friends have recently bought a yellow lab with no ancestry and no health checks.
I personally think the breeder is as important as the breed.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 30/06/2023 15:45

I completely agree and I have two pedigrees of a breed that are very popular with puppy farmers and some of the franken-dogs I see, not to mention the health issues! But I think pedigrees with having a “standard” and a breed club make it slightly easier to weedle out the puppy farmers. Even though it is harder and harder these days. They’ve got so clever!

doodleygirl · 30/06/2023 15:45

@Twoshoesnewshoes can you tell me the name of your breeder. We lost our 13.5 yr old girl last year and are now thinking of another. I have done so much research but cannot find an ethical home breeder.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/06/2023 15:48

@doodleygirl ours is 13 too and the breeder has retired!
there was a very good breeder/stud in carne in Wiltshire though that someone got a pup from a few years ago, I’ll see if I can find her.

GiraffeDoor · 30/06/2023 15:48

Tibetan terrier. Smaller than a lab, but not very terrier-like. Lovely cuddly family dogs, good with children, a good sized garden is enough for them not to mind skipping a "proper walk" here and there. But like all breeds that don't shed, they need grooming and/or clipping.

OrlandointheWilderness · 30/06/2023 15:55

Spaniel. Fab dogs. I've got spans and my partner has a lab - the lab far, far outsheds my two boys! He's incredibly dehairy!

ashamed1235 · 30/06/2023 16:12

I’ve got a doodle, never again! She is lovely, but yappy, anxious, reactive etc etc.
However, my springer was a laid lack, happy bundle of joy. However, she also malted so that doesn’t really answer your question!

Spanielsarepainless · 30/06/2023 16:30

I'd stick with Labradors. They are absolutely everything gorgeous that you say. I give mine a thorough combing several times a week and hair isn't a problem.

GoldDuster · 30/06/2023 16:35

I think your answer is resignation to the fact that nothing in life is perfect, a couple of robot hoovers and another Lab from your breeder.

Azaeleasinbloom · 30/06/2023 19:52

I keep hearing how awful labs are for shedding, but I have 2 blacks and that’s not my experience. They do get yumega oil every day and have does from an early age, and get brushed regularly , and together they shed less than my friends yellow lab.

But that’s not what you asked - so I would suggest a Border Terrier, female. Lovely personality.

Same here, we have two black girls (working) and whilst they do shed it's nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. Spaniels are worse for being mud magnets ime.

Poshjock · 30/06/2023 21:55

Poodles! I too had labradors and I agree they were all amazing dogs, each with their distinct personality but all absolute bulletproof.

Then we adopted Poshdog, the poodle. The biggest shock was the hair, he doesn't shed AT ALL! which from a multi lab household took a bit of getting used to. He is such a cool dude, very funny. Biddable and keen to please which means he trained easy. They have a fun streak which can make for a bouncy dog if not trained and socialised properly but shouldn't be an issue for a seasoned owner. He's very intelligent - way more so than the labs. I didn't think I could ever see past the labs but here we are - I'd have a Poodle again in a heartbeat.

The downsides - He needs combed regularly to keep his soft wool in check and grooming is a must. I prefer the short haired look and I also groom him myself, but its a regular task. He's got allergies but this has stabilised now we have him on raw.

Poodles are amazing.
I also think rottweilers are amazing but obviously massive and they do shed a bit but they have lovely personalities.

Agree. I have a black lab and a border and they both have amazing temperaments.

Boxers in my extensive experience (of boxers!) are the most perfect dog in every way

I agree they are lovely but I've known 3 and they've all been neurotic.

That's unlucky. We had 5 and only one was kind of neurotic
