A breed similar in temperament to a labrador… but without the shedding

CocoonofDavid · 30/06/2023 14:52

I don’t necessarily think such a paragon of virtue exists… but..

We have had labradors as family dogs for over 15 years, we’ve had three in that time. We still have two- aged 12 and 8.

All three have been very different personalities, however what they have had in common in their absolutely stellar temperament.

Pretty much everything is approached as ‘woohoo!! My favourite thing!’. They love people- their people and new people/strangers. It doesn’t matter if you’re getting up to go to take them for a walk or just nip to the loo- they want to come with you to keep you company and they’ll do it with a big smile on their face.

They have all been uncomplicated- not phased by fireworks, thunder, moving house, changes in routine, being left with house sitters when we rarely go away. They are all good with livestock and smaller animals. They have been beyond amazing with our own children and visiting ones. They are generally very chilled out about life, little phases them, everything is approached with a grin on their face.

Yes, they are HARDWORK as puppies (dear god on occasion they brought me to my knees!). We have had some inevitable damage to things that got chewed, and they were bitey land sharks for a time, but once you’re through the puppy stage they have been complete delights. They want to please/get things right, have been a doddle to train and always had solid recalls, and want to stay close to you on walks (within a few meters/always in sight- no wandering off into the undergrowth after interesting smells).

However…. The hair! My goodness the hair! Our downstairs is hoovered every day, usually twice a day… but within 30 min looks like it’s never been done. It gets ingrained into the carpets upstairs. They sleep in the kids rooms (which we are very happy with and brings great comfort and joy to both parties, so don’t want to change). But bedding is always hairy too, despite being washed at least once per week, often twice.

We have a fairly outdoorsy lifestyle and in the winter they get filthy on walks, and even when just nipping into the garden in the worst of the winter.

We were discussing the other day whether we will get another when (hopefully a very long time from now ☹️) our older dog passes.

I think we probably will go for another Labrador, either from the same breeder, or from very similar lines.

However, it got me thinking, I wonder if there are any other breeds out there that are similar temperament wise, but without the constant shedding, and possibly even a touch smaller? Around the 10-20kg mark rather than 30kg?

Friends have different breeds and having spent time with them, none of them would be a fit for us- too strong a prey drive, too aloof, can be difficult with other dogs, too much grooming required for long coats, breeds predisposed to health problems.

I wouldn’t want any dog (or more to the point encourage the breeding of) that had extreme features, the breeds with squashed faces, or big folds of skin, too long in the back, etc that are detrimental to their health. I am also not interested in mixed breeds, doodles etc for similar ethical reasons. I would want a puppy (as ours were), from fully health tested parents, from an experienced breeder, somehow involved in the breed whether that was working or showing but was breeding with a sense of what they were trying to achieve/improve upon.

Not asking for a lot, eh?! 🤣

i just wondered if there were any other breeds out there we should possibly research.

Many thanks!

Boxers for me too! Crazy but wonderful

Nix32 · 30/06/2023 22:09

@GiraffeDoor We've got a Tibetan Terrier and he's absolutely gorgeous. Completely agree with everything you said.

Groutyonehereagain · 30/06/2023 22:09

We’ve had a golden retriever and a Labrador both gorgeous dogs. We now have a miniature poodle. She is a wonderful dog, intelligent, easy to train, willing, joyful, and best of all, non-shedding.

TrickyBiscuits · 30/06/2023 22:13

Hungarian viszla?

Whippetlovely · 30/06/2023 22:18

The poster that said a whippet cross lab (whipador) that sounds good for you. I have a pure whipppet he’s great with kids , lazy in the house lovely size and doesn’t shed. However you said you don’t want a dog with prey drive and obviously he loves to chase rabbits and birds but not had an issue of him catching one yet! A lab/whippet sounds like a good choice hopefully less shedding but the best qualities of both breeds.

LokiCokey · 30/06/2023 22:21

The stellar temperament, easy to please, happy, unfazed, easy to train, people loving, etc... could all easily be describing my Bichon Frise... and the one I had as a child. Quite different from a Lab though...GrinGrinGrin

Lagotto?
Or if you can find one, a Curley coated retriever will shed less than a lab

Oh that is so not true! We’ve just got our 4th Curly. They shed just as much as a lab, got one of those too and twice a year they blow their coat and there is hair EVERYWHERE. Great tumble weeds of it. Worst of all… it looks like pubes!
Apart from that Curlies are utterly fabulous dogs.

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/06/2023 22:54

Another poodle fan. But labradors just do what they are asked to done, poodles ask you to justify your request with good quality evidence.
Mine is from a European moyen (middle sized) line registered and standard in UK. He is not as tall and weighs just 21kg.

A breed similar in temperament to a labrador… but without the shedding
teaandcake123 · 30/06/2023 22:55

Finnish Lapphunds are wonderful dogs and don’t shed. They are around 20kg, fluffy and easy-going.

LizziesTwin · 30/06/2023 22:58

Portuguese water dogs - don’t shed, don’t sulk and are working dogs. They are independent thinkers but somehow also Velcro dogs.

CuteCillian · 30/06/2023 23:06

Standard poodles approach every situation with positivity in my experience, whereas
Lagotto's and Portuguese/Spanish water dogs can be anxious.
I know others will have different opinions depending on dogs they have owned or worked with.
The non- shedding is lovely though.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 30/06/2023 23:07

You describe labs perfectly and why I'll always need one in my life. Excessive shedding and all. No other dog can compare for me.

Orders76 · 30/06/2023 23:48

Boxers are mad as a box of frogs imo.
Yorkies are fabulous but they are talkative and cheeky. Spaniels are total darlings but not non shed.
Our Labrador was an absolute joy and for that I honestly didn't mind hoovering multiple times a day for her.
My next consideration would have been a doodle but having read these I'm wondering if I should just go poodle.

Paperbagsaremine · 30/06/2023 23:57

GoldDuster · 30/06/2023 16:35

I think your answer is resignation to the fact that nothing in life is perfect, a couple of robot hoovers and another Lab from your breeder.

This I suspect.
If you are happy with the dogs, adapt the home...
I feel your pain, I have a greyhound who (most unusually) has a low prey drive and moults very little, but likes to develop odd phobias just because. Nothing NORMAL like fireworks or vets... Sigh. So I know how worthwhile it is having a dog who just goes "oh great!" at everything... And also, having grown up with a Lab, understand why you're asking because OMG THE HAIR.

WomanFromTheNorth · 01/07/2023 00:08

There's nothing unethical about cross breeds. It's actually more natural. There "pure" dog breeders have done a great job at persuading people it's not ethical. It's bizarre.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 01/07/2023 00:21

Yep, you don’t need a Doodle but you could have a Poodle - DH had three before children came along and we had our three Labradors, fabulous dogs. We also had a greyhound when our oldest Labrador was in need of a buddy, she was adorable, and virtually non shedding. But I also second Portuguese Water Dog - not ours, best friends and we’re his second home - omg he’s adorable and definitely a Velcro dog but in a good way 😊

bbyno2 · 01/07/2023 00:23

My lab died this week, she was 11. Reading you describe labs filled my heart up, they're very special. She was my first and only ever dog.

Lindawater · 01/07/2023 00:25

Nope - they really are pretty special. Recommend a good robot hoover.

Radiodread · 01/07/2023 00:29

I have zero problem with crossbreeds that are health tested properly on both sides. Ie heart tests for anything boxer, cavalier, so many others, hip and elbow X-ray, gonio, etc for retrievers… plus I’d want a measure of inbreeding.

i reckon a PP had it right when they said, best to accept no dog is perfect and they all have their idiosyncrasies like us humans. Hair absolutely frigging everywhere is a small price to pay for all the other pluses. When I’m picking golden retriever hair out of my contact lens for the bazillioth time I remind myself that I couldn’t cope with a dog that had a strong prey drive, was unintelligent, had wanderlust, allergies, dog reactivity, people-aloofness, breathing issues, heat/cold intolerance, separation anxiety, was very vocal etc etc etc. there’s a reason retrievers like labs and goldens are so popular.

curlies are lovely but you need to be really careful as the domestic gene pool is very small with all that entails for heritable diseases, small litter size, shorter life span and cancer, etc.

This. Infact definitely get another lab. Sure the place is covered in hair anyway!
I do empathise with the hair issue though. we have one and it sometimes seems like I’ve a whole pack of them in the house. I just have 2 vacuum cleaners on the go, a sweeping brush and dust pan for in between vacs.
I love him so much though and his unending supply of hair!

M0lly10 · 01/07/2023 00:51

Hungarian viszla?

This. Or a Viszlador (Viszla Lab cross)

So affectionate, intelligent, obedient and loyal, and no shedding or drooling.

I've had labradors and Viszla's. Only thing I miss about the labradors compared to Viszlas is the labradors love of water and swimming.

M0lly10 · 01/07/2023 00:55

Just seen you don't want a cross, but this is a lovely cross! Best of both

AlfietheSchnauzer · 01/07/2023 00:57

Another vote for Schnauzers! They're hypoallergenic, don't shed and aren't chewers. Daft as a brush though! Grin

Objectrelations · 01/07/2023 00:58

Poodle. No hoovering required Grin
