A breed similar in temperament to a labrador… but without the shedding

I don’t necessarily think such a paragon of virtue exists… but..

We have had labradors as family dogs for over 15 years, we’ve had three in that time. We still have two- aged 12 and 8.

All three have been very different personalities, however what they have had in common in their absolutely stellar temperament.

Pretty much everything is approached as ‘woohoo!! My favourite thing!’. They love people- their people and new people/strangers. It doesn’t matter if you’re getting up to go to take them for a walk or just nip to the loo- they want to come with you to keep you company and they’ll do it with a big smile on their face.

They have all been uncomplicated- not phased by fireworks, thunder, moving house, changes in routine, being left with house sitters when we rarely go away. They are all good with livestock and smaller animals. They have been beyond amazing with our own children and visiting ones. They are generally very chilled out about life, little phases them, everything is approached with a grin on their face.

Yes, they are HARDWORK as puppies (dear god on occasion they brought me to my knees!). We have had some inevitable damage to things that got chewed, and they were bitey land sharks for a time, but once you’re through the puppy stage they have been complete delights. They want to please/get things right, have been a doddle to train and always had solid recalls, and want to stay close to you on walks (within a few meters/always in sight- no wandering off into the undergrowth after interesting smells).

However…. The hair! My goodness the hair! Our downstairs is hoovered every day, usually twice a day… but within 30 min looks like it’s never been done. It gets ingrained into the carpets upstairs. They sleep in the kids rooms (which we are very happy with and brings great comfort and joy to both parties, so don’t want to change). But bedding is always hairy too, despite being washed at least once per week, often twice.

We have a fairly outdoorsy lifestyle and in the winter they get filthy on walks, and even when just nipping into the garden in the worst of the winter.

We were discussing the other day whether we will get another when (hopefully a very long time from now ☹️) our older dog passes.

I think we probably will go for another Labrador, either from the same breeder, or from very similar lines.

However, it got me thinking, I wonder if there are any other breeds out there that are similar temperament wise, but without the constant shedding, and possibly even a touch smaller? Around the 10-20kg mark rather than 30kg?

Friends have different breeds and having spent time with them, none of them would be a fit for us- too strong a prey drive, too aloof, can be difficult with other dogs, too much grooming required for long coats, breeds predisposed to health problems.

I wouldn’t want any dog (or more to the point encourage the breeding of) that had extreme features, the breeds with squashed faces, or big folds of skin, too long in the back, etc that are detrimental to their health. I am also not interested in mixed breeds, doodles etc for similar ethical reasons. I would want a puppy (as ours were), from fully health tested parents, from an experienced breeder, somehow involved in the breed whether that was working or showing but was breeding with a sense of what they were trying to achieve/improve upon.

Not asking for a lot, eh?! 🤣

i just wondered if there were any other breeds out there we should possibly research.

Many thanks!

I have a working line black lab and she sheds very little compared to other labs I know just as other posters said. She’s also dainty and lithe. You could move house as I’ve discovered that if she swims in the sea each day she doesn’t shed at all! It’s like a magic bath!

Mumtothreegirlies · 01/07/2023 01:28

My labrador passed away when he was 13 and we adopted a bichon frise, she’s 11kg can walk for miles, plays fetch, is a dream around children and small animals, doesn’t shed, eats small amounts, loves to cuddle and sleep a lot, is happy on her own for a few hours, and rarely barks but can bark really deeply on purpose to sound scary for knocking visitors.

My lab died this week, she was 11. Reading you describe labs filled my heart up, they're very special. She was my first and only ever dog.

My lab died over 7 years ago and I still think of him every single day so I’m sorry for your great loss xxx

ELLAMAR00 · 01/07/2023 01:38

We had a border terrier they have a lovely nature and do not shed and also the bedlington terrier. Bedlingtons are also very gentle I love them I found both breeds very easy to look after.

Livingmybestlifenow · 01/07/2023 01:44

Another vote for the Portuguese Water dog, lovely nature and trainable. Word of warning though, the one I know best is a MASSIVE food thief. So I guess pretty lab like in that respect too!

tobee · 01/07/2023 01:46

Love to see all this love for actual poodles! Often people are rather sniffy. I'm really hoping to get one in the medium to near future!

Threeboysadogandacat · 01/07/2023 01:57

We lost our old lab at 13 in 2020. He had a very thick, wavy coat and loved being brushed so it was an almost daily occurrence, yet the house was covered in hairs within minutes of hoovering. Ddog 2, also a lab, has a much smoother coat and hardly sheds at all, fortunate, as he’s not keen on being brushed. I wouldn’t have any other breed though.

tizwozliz · 01/07/2023 06:02

The older one never read the Labrador handbook, the younger is so far more typical but look how lovely a pile of labs looks!

Standard poodles approach every situation with positivity in my experience, whereas
Lagotto's and Portuguese/Spanish water dogs can be anxious.
I know others will have different opinions depending on dogs they have owned or worked with.
The non- shedding is lovely though.

I would agree with this completely everyone that I have seen in my surgery is cautious requiring bribery to be won round. A few weeks ago I needed to take my poodle to London for a course he had to travel on busy commuter trains something he had never done before he was impeccably behaved not bothering anyone, but if people asked if they could stroke he enjoyed the attention in a polite well mannered way.

ThePensivePig · 01/07/2023 06:45

Labs are probably the most loveable creatures to ever walk the earth. I absolutely adore them and in my 50 years, I've never met one with an unpleasant nature.

In your situation OP, I'd go with another lab from the trustworthy breeder. I love the sound of poodles though and the photos PP shared are gorgeous.

We have an adorable rescue greyhound, who I love very much. Minimal shedding, but in my experience they're not very 'doggy.' Slightly aloof and liable to turn down a walk because it's raining! You wouldn't find a lab doing that.

Azaeleasinbloom · 01/07/2023 07:42

@tizwozliz Awww. Beautiful, and those shiny coats !

Usernamenotavailab · 01/07/2023 08:30

The issue with doodles as people have said is that there are fewer ethical breeders. They’re fashionable, and people can earn a lot of money churning them out.

you’re more likely to hit a bad breeder/puppy farm than not, unless you’re really, really careful and prepared to walk away every time.

the other thing is for some reason people seem to see the crosses as “better”. When poodles are brilliant dogs in their own right. I don’t know why but people get really snobby about them. They’ll list all the attributes they want, which for the poodle, but then want to outcross and risk not getting those qualities. For example if you want a non shedding, low allergy trigger dog, why cross one you’ve already got with a shedding breed? You’re vastly lowering the chances of getting the coat type you want!!

same with personality- a cross may have the best of it’s parents traits, but also the worst. Which is why quite a few are neurotic etc.

I love my yorkie btw. I know not many like small dogs though and they can be a little reserved with strangers. Cleverer than you think though 😂

Saucery · 01/07/2023 08:43

I’ll have Labs as long as I’m physically able to give them all they need, but MIL has had a succession of Poodles and every one of them has been a delight. Adaptable, loyal, trainable, active, friendly…..they have the “lamb” cuts so don’t look fussy, beautiful little dogs.

CocoonofDavid · 01/07/2023 08:47

Wow! So many replies. Thank you! And thank you for the super cute pictures too.

@bbyno2 and @Mumtothreegirlies I am so sorry for your loss and I completely understand. Our first Labrador was my heart dog. The grief I felt when he was PTS was beyond words. He just looked into my soul.

I think coat shedding can vary between labs and at different stages, but no guarantee as to what you’ll get! Our younger dog was originally much less of a shedder than the older one, blowing her coat spectacularly twice a year, and a small amount of shedding all the time… but then she was spayed the shedding got worse, more like our older dog who sheds all the time badly, and just steps it up a little at coat change time.

We need minimal prey drive as we have pet chickens at home and the dogs often come to the stables with me, where not only are there horses, but also rabbits in the fields and the occasional deer. So I’m not sure about some of the terriers or greyhounds. Although I think I’ve heard some terrier breeds are worse than others regarding small furry creatures.

I had wondered about poodles (and actually bicons too, as they often get mentioned as good family dogs!) but how do you find the noise? I’ve heard both can be quite barky/yappy? Our labs are a bit at the other end of that scale, in that they almost never bark, not even when someone knocks on the door etc (they are too delighted that someone new has arrived and might want to fuss them 🙄) The odd door /stranger danger bark would be quite useful, but not to the extreme I see some local dogs in the village- they bark constantly every time someone walks along the pavement in front of their house.

Thank you everyone

Sight hounds don't shed much and generally lovely natured dogs. My absolute favourite breed however is the flat coat retriever, gorgeous big soppy dogs, they do shed though.

Is that a bean bag?! My black lab has one exactly the same. We say he looks like a seal on a rock.

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 01/07/2023 08:52

Yellow lab was awful for shedding. Black labs don’t shed much at all.
working rather than show dogs

LokiCokey · 01/07/2023 08:54

@CocoonofDavid my Bichon isn't yappy, his bark actually sounds like that of a larger dog... he's never really been one to bark at random noises and minds his own business on walks

Whiskeypowers · 01/07/2023 08:58

@tizwozliz
What beautiful glossy dogs ❤️

I keep hearing how awful labs are for shedding, but I have 2 blacks and that’s not my experience

Same here, we have two black girls (working) and whilst they do shed it's nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. Spaniels are worse for being mud magnets ime.

Same. Have you had a black lab from a working line, OP? We have two and the hair isn't too bad at all, other than when they have a seasonal moult in spring and autumn. We have fostered various breeds in the past, and I'd say our labs are at the lower end of the shedding spectrum, apart from non-shedders like poodles.

Also, you have to factor in ease of cleaning. It's very easy to get mud off a black lab, compared to many other breeds. And you never have to take them to a groomer.

DogsvsCats · 01/07/2023 09:14

We have 2 of the breeds recommended on here, a Vizslador and a schnauzer. They are 4 years apart- viz was a maniac as a puppy but is the absolute sweetest now, the schnauzer has been a superb puppy and has the nicest personality as an older dog

The Viz does shed but not horrendously and the schnauzer doesn't but needs the groomers every 4 weeks.

Of the 4 labs that we walk with / know well I'd say they have lots of similarities in character and temperament as my 2- ie loyal, great adventurers, good robust dogs, adaptable, social etc

ElmTree22 · 01/07/2023 09:22

Reading your post just makes me want a lab! We have a full working line long haired German Shepherd so we have to deal with the hair and the crazy batshit temperament, he's terrified of fireworks, alert barks if he hears a paper bag rustle in the front garden, has RIDICULOUS prey drive and is an absolute oaf at 46kg. Wouldn't change him for the world but I would suggest steering clear for your family 😂 they are a handful for all of their lives.

Groutyonehereagain · 01/07/2023 09:22

My nine month old, brilliant, gorgeous, wonderful poodle has only barked twice so far. She’s very quiet. This is her at nine weeks. We don’t give her the traditional poodle cut, just once all over. We prefer a more natural look.

Erm A Labrador obvs🙈🤣and a robot vacuum.

I’ve had other breeds, grown up with dogs all my life and so has DH. Nothing beats a lab. Hands down the best boy, completely un phased by anything, so loving, he genuinely adores being in the mix with young children. I have separated him at times, as he’s getting on a bit but he just fights to get back to them!

A school friend of mine had Staffies, they seemed genuinely lovely tolerant and loving dogs too, I don’t know much about shedding, barking or separation anxiety with them though???
