Neutering

Can neutering make a dog aggressive to adults.I love the personality of my dog , he is very good with children and adults if maybe a little frisky.
Has anyone had this personality change or the increased anxiety that apparently it can bring on in some dogs.

I have owned 2 dogs, both rescues. One was 8 when I got him and entire. He had a medical problem which necessitated him being neutered at about age 9. No change at all in his personality.

Second dog, 2 1/2 years old, had him neutered, and no real change in him. He's growled once at an entire dog, but minimal and more of a complaint than a growl. Neutered dogs often growled at him before he was neutered and it isn't uncommon. He is exactly the same personality other than that one occurrence and we are 5 months on now.

How old is your dog atm?
Timing of when to neuter alongside the personality of the dog in question are the important factors when deciding what’s right for an individual.
Im a trainer and my advice ranges from ‘do it at 6 months’ for the occasional dog and ‘never’ for others! There really is no one size fits all option

My dog ( lab) was, and is, a very gentle soul. On vets advice we left him until he was over 3 to ensure he had the physical benefit of the testosterone and also the maturity. Some dogs who are neutered young can be fear aggressive afterwards.

We also tried the implant for 6 months before the op, to allow us to see what if any changes it made. Perhaps talk to your vet about that?

Depends on the dog.
We had ours neutered at 18 months and it was the right decision. A neighbour had they’d already nervous GSD done at 1 and it’s now very dog aggressive.
Discuss with your vet

Rule of thumb is if your dog is nervous anxious or shows any signs of anxiety there is a high chance that this will get worse after castration.

How old is your dog?

I always thought it calmed dogs down? Best is to ask the vet who will have experience of 100s before and afters.
My own dog was done at seven weeks (😮) by the breeder so have no anecdotal evidence myself.

You can get a testosterone blocking injection that will chemically castrate them for apx 6 months and then wears off, which would show you how you dog would likely be when castrated.

tabulahrasa · 29/06/2023 12:39

I wouldn’t worry at all if your dog is fairly confident and doesn’t have any issues tbh.

It’s only something I factor in it the dog is already nervous or anxious.

We got our beagle neutered at 18 months and in hindsight I wish we hadn't as he's much more fearful now.

If your dog is happy and confident with other dogs I wouldn't risk upsetting the status quo by getting him neutered yet - try the injection and see what happens.

Mine was 9 months but he needed another operation and the vet recommended one operation is better than 2.

He had actually started humping, very badly in the weeks before, and I mean it was like he was humping 24/7. That stopped immediately. It did calm him down slightly and I don't know if it's a combination of all the training paying off, but he listened better. He remained the cheeky, confident pup he was before and it didn't change his personality.
