My dog has allergies and is on apoquel and all sorts of drops. I am thinking a change of diet may help. I have heard a fish based diet would be good. Can anyone recommend a good food for a very allergic shih tzu? Thank you!

Many dogs appear to be sensitive to chicken. My dog scratched non-stop until he was changed onto a fish-based diet.

Have you tried Pooch & Mutt?

Harringtons do a salmon and potato food which could work? They do a wet and a dry version.

Burns do a great dry food - Fish & Brown rice, which is good for allergic dogs.
If you want wet food, Canagan have a great range, including Salmon & Herring which my girl loves.
If you need treats / snacks, the best ones are from Homesavers (I'm in Ireland), which is B&M Bargains in the UK. They have a range called Fishermans Dog, and have Cod Knots which are dried cod skins, as well as salmon based treats. All the dogs love them, and they're great quality!

Our itchy dog was on a Tails.com diet - totally grain free and fish based. You can edit the combination of food to suit your dog.

Our fussy dog mostly eats raw but she also has tails sensitive grain free salmon kibble for when we are away from home or pushed for time (or hung over) You don't need the subscription as it's available in sainsburys

They also do cod wet food.

I'd be really wary of chopping and changing too much tho

Ddog is on Eukanuba vet diet dermatosis fp. The vet arranged an allergy test (about £350, I think) and then supplied a list of suitable food across several brands and available from independent suppliers. We get it from zooplus. It is fish based.

Such great replies. Thank you. I will have a good look at all of these suggestions. Can diet really make a difference?

Millie's Wolfheart do some fish based ones...grain free if you are after that too

PinkFootstool · 23/06/2023 19:38

Yes, it can make a huge difference. My girl was chewing on her paws and made her ears bleed with scratching them. It all stopped in a day or two of a new diet.
