If you have a KC Cavalier or similar…. Off lead ever?

Or do only on lead?

I have a cavapoo who is 50% cavalier KC spaniel, if that counts? We let him off the lead in large grassy areas to play with his ball and run around. He doesn’t get let off his lead to walk around the park as he is too easily distracted and would run off to chase squirrels, chase runners, jump up and say hello to children etc. so he’s on lead for the majority of walks

Bluebelle27 · 23/06/2023 06:10

Come to think of it though, there are 3-4 cavalier KC spaniels we see in the park regularly and all but one are kept on their lead. The one who is off lead is a 3 year old female (and is absolutely adorable!)

Jazzappledelish · 23/06/2023 06:17

When you say off lead in large grassy areas but not a park… where do you go?

Failingteenparenting · 23/06/2023 06:20

We also have a Cavapoo, he’s off the lead in the park and in the countryside (not near sheep) but on the lead near roads. He has a fear of losing us so never goes too far and if he does we just start to walk in the opposite direction and he freaks out and comes back.

clpsmum · 23/06/2023 06:34

My cavalier King Charles is off the lead a lot. Most of the time tbh except near busy roads

clpsmum · 23/06/2023 06:35

I've had four ckc in total and three of them were off the lead most of the time

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 23/06/2023 06:37

It depends on how well trained your dog is rather than the breed itself.

Does your dog have good recall around distractions? Will he/she come away from picnics, other dogs, children playing football, bikes, squirrels etc?

Same. As a puppy he couldn't be trusted, and ran off in the direction of busy roads more than once, nearly giving me heart failure, but we worked on that (with lots of treats!) and now he has great recall.

Tbh he's so obsessed with me that he never ventures too far from my side anyway.

cornflakesandtea · 23/06/2023 06:49

We used to let our KC cavalier off lead all the time. She had good recall, it was never an issue

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2023 07:00

Totally agree with coffee.

SunSurfSand · 23/06/2023 07:03

I had King Charles cavvies- they were all too stupid (but beautiful and loving etc) to be let off the lead.

They would have frolicked straight under a bus.

DiscoBeat · 23/06/2023 07:04

Ours was off lead in large areas too but not the park, he was too interested in running up to people to say hello!

clpsmum · 23/06/2023 07:05

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal same!! They are the clingiest dogs ever aren't they! Lovely though

ProfessorXtra · 23/06/2023 07:07

My cav goes off lead with my cocker all the time. We have a huge open field near the house one entrance so I can see if someone comes in. Plenty of people use it for dogs. It’s next to a park so if someone without dogs comes in, I put them on lead, only because I know some people feel nervous around dogs. I know their recall is great. The other people don’t.

NashvilleQueen · 23/06/2023 07:08

Mine was great off lead in parks, tow paths etc and had excellent recall. Terrible road sense though - would have happily just run in front of a car- so never anywhere built up

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/06/2023 07:14

He's like my tiny furry stalker, @clpsmum! 😆

How old is she, @Jazzappledelish, and can we have some photos, on this thread please, as there seems to be a few Cavvy fans?

This is Harry, he's 20 months. We adore him.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/06/2023 07:26

Didn't load!

clpsmum · 23/06/2023 07:27

@Jazzappledelish I'm sorry to tell you but you never will again!!!!!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 23/06/2023 07:28

I’ve got two. One can’t only be off a lead when we book secure areas of them to go for a walk, he’s got that generic spaniel selective deafness and no self preservation whatsoever. My other has absolutely bulletproof recall and a bulletproof “leave” (so we can get him to disengage from squirrels/stop trying to eat cat shit) without being on a lead so he’s allowed off lead

Jazzappledelish · 23/06/2023 07:29

But I feel so guilt ridden when she’s curled up asleep and I know that if I pop to the washing machine / bathroom / anywhere… she will drag herself up and follow me!
