All dogs need off lead fun!

Well yes ideally but rather depends on quite a few factors

OP posts:
tonyhawks23 · 23/06/2023 07:40

No Its a basic requirement for dogs.you can rent enclosed dog parks if they have no recall.

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2023 07:42

Do you have one of these dogs OP?

My Cavi has good recall and I feel ok off lead with her

but my goodness… I do not judge anyone with a prey driven dog and not a bullet proof recall deciding lead only

Then you hire an enclosed field?

Onedaylikethi5 · 23/06/2023 07:48

Our CKCS is one, he's a loveable idiot. Can safely be off lead in wide open space with no near by distractions empty park, beach etc. As soon as there is another person or dog he is over there desperately saying hello, even if being barked and growled at. He thinks everyone is his friend. And is his nose is to the ground his ears switch off.

very few and far between in south east commuter belt

you have a border collie (I recall from previous thread). It would be cruel not to allow off lead!

but different dogs have different needs

My boy is off lead as much as possible. Never around cars or traffic though, and I'd be quite surprised at any breed being off lead in those circumstances (although I do live in an area of London where people seem to view the Highway Code advisory at best).

He has excellent recall because he can’t bear to be out of my sight for more than a second (unless there's fireworks and then he's a Daddy's boy) and I spent a lot of time training him as a puppy so he doesn't jump up at people or approach other dogs without permission, so I feel quite confident that he's safe off lead.

Here he is, hard at work supervising me in the office. Yes, that is his personal couch 😁

To add, we trained and trained and trained. We train daily still. But I can't train out an absolute love for everything he sees that could be a new friend. He is my favourite furry idiot.

I’d be very surprised if they’re few and far between there tbh, they’re a huge business just now and commuter belts are where they seem to be springing up...

You’d be surprised then! But if you can find some in Kent near the train line towns ie so non drivers can there, then let me know and I’ll spread the word!

I should add my dog who is selectively deaf does go on a long line where practical. This means he can have a lovely run but we have a line of defence should he want to bother cattle or run into the road.

MSNuserof99 · 23/06/2023 08:59

Obviously Kent’s a large county, but we’ve been here https://www.royalhoundsclose.co.uk/ and it’s relatively near a train station….

Newpeep · 23/06/2023 09:04

Train a check in not a recall. Reward pup every time she looks at you. Every time. High value. Then do it in the garden. Then boring walks, more exciting etc. Train her to WANT to stay close. Much more reliable than a recall which I only use in an emergency. I walk WITH my dog (a working terrier, shock horror) as she wants to stick close. If I am not sure she can do that - picnics, sheep, small children - she goes on the lead until we're clear.

Jazzappledelish · 23/06/2023 06:17

When you say off lead in large grassy areas but not a park… where do you go?

Sorry I mean we let him off in large grassy areas of the park but wouldn’t let him off his lead to walk round the footpaths of the park

Soupsetscared · 23/06/2023 11:14

Son has a cavachon is very good off the lead unless by a main road.

tonyhawks23 · 23/06/2023 11:35

Yes we have numerous dog fields round here, they seem to be regular good business. Try googling in your area, try your local RSPCA for example or ask at your Vets. Ive at least 3 I can go to within 20 mins of my house if I had a worry about being off lead. Cant imagine a life on a lead for a dog. What would be the concern about letting them off lead? Yes mines a collie but a spaniel is a working dog too and needs to run, its a basic need. Do try and think about safe places you could go where you can give them freedom.

I have/had two cavachons, only have one now, but she is good at recall and tends to avoid people and dogs so is allowed off lead in safe areas, my previous boy not so much, he loved people so would amble off to see them, and on more than one occasion invited himself to join a family picnic 😞but he also went deaf so had to be kept on lead as it just wasn't safe to let him off, but we have a huge garden so he could freely run around at home.

BeansOnToast32 · 23/06/2023 13:14

Mine is always on lead on my usual walk, she's not 1yo yet.

Where I walk near my house there's loads of joggers and cyclists that appear from nowhere at speed, there's quite a few bends and turns lined with huge trees and bushes so you can't see them approaching sometimes.

She's on a flexi which I know people hate but she's really good at coming back on them, if I say "by me" she runs to my side and then I say "keep close" she will walk by the side of me. I use these commands if I see cyclists, joggers, prams, wheelchairs or people walking in general but usually if she sees them approaching she's expecting me to tell her so she will sometimes come back herself.

I'm scared that a cyclist will run her over when they come zooming round a bend is she's off lead.

I don't mind her being off lead in big open fields.

tonyhawks23 · 23/06/2023 14:10

I’m serious ( 😂) where have I even remotely indicated or even alluded to being anxious. If you bothered to read my posts, I have my Cavi off lead!

Yes it’s great because my Cavi has good recall and I’m very fit so can keep up with a fast pace

But it does not mean someone who has a Cavi with sporadic recall and perhaps less nimble on their feet to choose lead walking.

You seem to think the latter is a tragedy and a failing on the part of the owner
