Dog and beer garden

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 13:44

Would you take your dog to sit in a pub beer garden in the temperatures we're currently experiencing in the UK? We drive there, so no walking. Healthy dog, no issues. He's in and out of the garden all day, looks for shade when he needs it.

Someone made a comment yesterday and I'm feeling a bit judged for taking him out.

Thanks...yes there was shade.

Yes not an issue

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 11/06/2023 13:49

I wouldn’t take mine. It’s 27 degrees where I am. Mine are double coated and would be so uncomfortable

MintJulia · 11/06/2023 13:49

With shade, yes. Take a bowl with you and ask the barmaid to fill it. Then dog is as happy as he can be anywhere.

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 13:50

Pub has dog bowls.

I was more concerned about leaving him in our kitchen without windows open as it gets hot in there (south facing).

Healthy dog, shade and water - yes. It has to be significantly hotter than this for us to change our plans.

If your dog looks like it's struggling, do something about it, but there's quite a bit of hysteria at the moment about walking dogs in the heat.

Some people are taking the advice applicable to a fat, elderly pug and applying it to a young Jack Russell.

FishOnABicycleMadeForTwo · 11/06/2023 14:05

But why drive your dog to a pub?
Why feel the need to take the dog with you if you aren’t going to be walking?

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2023 14:06

No, why do you need to do that?
Its not part of his walk or anything

CindersAgain · 11/06/2023 14:08

In the UK. Where in the UK, or rather, how hot was it? I was just out in town in jeans, a T-shirt, a hoodie and a body warmer.

grimmers44 · 11/06/2023 14:10

It wouldn't bother me as long as there was shade under the table or whatever.

I think after we had the really hot summer last year, people are getting really judgey about dogs in what is pretty normal summer temperatures.

Obviously everything depends on how old/fit/furry your dog is but people are now getting in a tiz and worrying about taking dogs anywhere if it's over 20 degrees.

DazeOff · 11/06/2023 14:10

Nope. It's 31 here. Leave dog at home.

AllGussiedUp · 11/06/2023 14:12

No, it’s too hot. They’re walked early morning and late evening.

Stupid comment. What’s wrong with driving dogs places?

Floralnomad · 11/06/2023 14:19

I wouldn’t have taken mine because he is happier indoors where he can mooch about unrestricted

SixOClock · 11/06/2023 14:20

If there was shade and water and dog wasn't in distress, then fine. As it's so hot seems a good way to get your dog out, smelling new things, seeing people and places without exerting themselves.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 11/06/2023 14:22

If there was good shade, water available and dogs were welcome.

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 14:23

It was about 27.

Yes, dog was walked at about 8am when it was cool. We don't walk him to the pub because it's a bit too far. We take him to socialise him - lots of other dogs there.

OP posts:
Maddy70 · 11/06/2023 14:24

Yes of course.

PinkFootstool · 11/06/2023 14:26

With complete shade and a bowl of water next to her, absolutely no problem. We have done that for years. The only issue is the walk to get there - if it's too hot (paws burning, pavement melting, overheating temps etc) to walk the 1/2 mile to the pub, she doesn't come.

Ours is a husky cross and lies in full sunlight in the garden, cooking herself. Every so often she sprints in the back door, panting like fury for a big drink, flops on her cool mat for a bit then takes herself out again 🙄. She has shade in all areas and opts not to use it when it suits her. I wouldn't let her out in 30c and blazing sunshine obv but at 22c she can choose her own sleeping spots!

MissyB1 · 11/06/2023 14:26

Yes I would, and would make sure my dog was in the shade with her own water (I take one of those portable dog water things).
Although I wouldn’t be there hours. And yes we drive our dog out to Country pubs, wonder why pp thinks that’s odd? 🤔

gogohmm · 11/06/2023 14:27

Depends on the beer garden, the one near my parents is full of shady trees you can pull the tables under and has a river running through it that he swims in, find to have them off lead

Simonjt · 11/06/2023 14:28

Depends on the dog too, short snouted would be a no, healthy dog, healthy weight, shade and not short snouted would be a yes.

NoSquirrels · 11/06/2023 14:28

If there were lots of other dogs there, why are you feeling like it was something unwise?

Because someone made a comment to me. Like I said in my OP.
