Dog and beer garden

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 13:44

Would you take your dog to sit in a pub beer garden in the temperatures we're currently experiencing in the UK? We drive there, so no walking. Healthy dog, no issues. He's in and out of the garden all day, looks for shade when he needs it.

Someone made a comment yesterday and I'm feeling a bit judged for taking him out.

It would be better to leave your dog at home so that other people can relax and enjoy the beer garden.

Goodness me, the heat has affected lots of people's moods. Saying hello and giving a pat to lovely dogs in the pub is one of the joys of a beer garden.

It was about 27.

Yes, dog was walked at about 8am when it was cool. We don't walk him to the pub because it's a bit too far. We take him to socialise him - lots of other dogs there.

27 degrees and you brought your dog out to socialise?
He has no choice so you make hopefully good choices for him....
There is no need to ' socialise' dogs, they often dont enjoy it, its stressful and unneccesary.

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 15:44

@KnickerlessParsons why would people not be able to relax because my dog is there?

Because lots of people are not used to dogs. Lots of people have been bitten by dogs. So you dont get to inflict your dog on others just cos you want. I say that as someone with three dogs.

Spanielsarepainless · 11/06/2023 16:15

Normal, healthy dogs regulate their temperature as do all mammals including humans. If you are comfortable, the chance is the dog is too. Sitting in a pub garden is fine. Walking on a scorching pavement less so but you aren't doing that.

70sTomboy · 11/06/2023 16:16

We don't go to pubs very often, more likely while on holiday, and couldn't leave her behind anyway. Always find one with shade and not too close to other dogs or people. Although people usually ask to say hello, she is very friendly and very attractive so gets a lot of attention in RL we find most people are happy to have dogs around, those who aren't don't make a fuss, unlike on MN, and just keep their distance which is fine!
Dogs and pubs are normal, jokes about dogs leading to the pub when someone else walks them have always been around!

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 16:20

@bingohandjob I agree - lots of people love saying hello to him. And he loves it - bounds in as soon as he knows where we are.

How would OP be inflicting her dogs in people? Do you imagine she shoves her way onto their table and plonks her dog on their laps? 😂

Jeez surely other pub goers just ignore any dogs if they don’t like them? Dogs have been in pubs for as long as I’ve been alive and I’m mid 50s. I grew up opposite a pub, the landlord owned 2 dogs, they were always either in the pub or in the beer garden.

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 16:39

I'd rather dogs than kids but that's a whole other thread.

OP posts:
SquirrelFeed · 11/06/2023 17:11

Nothing wrong with a dog in a dog friendly pub. Plenty of non dog friendly pubs and restaurants about. Or soft play for people with kids - better than having them round. There’s somewhere for everyone.
I don’t really see the difference between your dog being at home or being driven to the pub either OP. People love to comment, my dog wore a little cool jacket last year and I got told I was cruel for making him wear clothes in the heat. 🙄

Completely agree. 27 is too bloody warm to be dragging your dog around a beer garden. Over heated, over stimulated dogs and loads of people drinking...what could possibly go wrong?

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 20:42

There's no need to socialise dogs? Really? I must have been reading completely the wrong training books then.

I'd say so. Most dogs need to know other dogs are there and ignore them. They dont need to go on social dates.

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/06/2023 21:18

Sorry but I think you're talking complete bollocks.

It depends on the dog - mine is only 2 years old but she hates the heat (weirdly since she comes from Cyprus!)

As soon as it hits 16 degrees she starts panting!

Today she chilled out in the bedroom on the bed with the fan blowing over my legs and her - barely moved all day after her 8am walk!

RunningFromInsanity · 11/06/2023 21:34

No, for a few reasons.

If your dog was struggling with the heat would you have left your meal halfway to take him home? Unlikely.

Heat can affect your dogs behaviour. A usually friendly dog that is uncomfortably hot may behave differently to usual.

Your dog is likely to be excited and ignore that fact that he is overheating. Especially as you said there are lots of dogs there and he loves to socialise/play- he may overheat without you or him realising.

Socialisation means getting your dogs used to lots of different people, dogs, smells, sights, sounds and situations.

It doesn't mean bringing them with you everywhere to spend time with other dogs.

Of course you dooooooo. Thats because its at variance with what you want to hear. Keep dragging your dog about in 27 degree heat if you want. Your choice. But ethically you shouldnt- its against all sound advice and no trainer or vet would agree with you including some on this thread. Dogs cannot regulate temperature quickly and most owners cant 'read' their dog. I train dogs for competition and never work them if its hot. Walks are always early morning or night, never in city. But you carry on, being you.

This. Above.
A voice of reason.
Dont put your dog in this situation. He cannot enjoy it.

Wolfiefan · 11/06/2023 21:40

I would visit a local pub in the evening. Sun setting. By a canal and near the river. Always a good cool breeze.
Middle of the day pub in town with a stone patio garden? No way.

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2023 21:43

Goldrushed · 11/06/2023 15:13

Why not? I take my dog with me where I can. So if I was going for a pub lunch and the dog could come of course I'd take her with me.

I probably wouldn't in 27 degree heat because even in the shade she'd be too hot. It's nice and cool in our house.

You’ve just answered your own question there.

It was evening. With a breeze. And we weren't eating a meal, to previous poster. Just a quick drink.
