Help finding a Chihuahua breeder near Manchester please?

I would like a full breed chihuahua but my googling is only showing up places like Gumtree/ Pets 4 homes etc

I would like to find a careful breeder, not a puppy farm or BYB.

Please don't tell me to go to a rescue. I have a 4 year old dog and I tried that, I was on waiting lists for months, refused by 3 or 4, told there were no suitable dogs. It went on a long time and I ended up getting my puppy.

I've just always, always wanted a Chi, since childhood and DH said I can get one for my milestone birthday.

I'm not ready yet, it would be more September/October but would like to find someone planning a litter.

Also I tried the KC siteof listed breeders but I've not got any replies from the emails.

Have you tried champ dogs? From experience you have to travel to find the right breeder.

I agree with Champ Dogs or go on the Kennel Clubs assured breeders list and contact the breeders on there. I second that you might have to be willing to travel though

Yes, I've emailed quite a few from champdogs.co.uk with no reply.

They all seem to be old details or people who retired years ago.

When you search their breeder names nothing comes up since 2018 etc

Not what you were asking but what is it you like about chis? I admit I am a person who likes big dogs but all the chis I meet seem so anxious and/or yappy and/or dog reactive/aggressive. Is that just bad ownership?

Soxford1 · 09/06/2023 22:01

I would research kc registered breed clubs and contact the secretary and ask for a list of planned litters

They seem like that when they are out - there is one that walks past my house. However, at home with their owner, they are adoring and lovely.

You could approach people who are walking one and ask where they got their dog?

I don't really see many, especially the type I'm looking for, they're usually crossbred or if I do see them I'm passing in the car I wouldn't want to pull over to ask, they'd probably think I was a dog theif 😂

It's a mixture of things.

Small dogs find the world quite scary - imagine being that height and everything looming over you - it would be pretty terrifying Grin so it's really important to work on their socialisation from a young age so that they learn the world isn't so terrifying. Even one scary incident can cause issues for life.

There's also the issue that small dogs are also seriously unlikely to do any damage if they jump or bite - a nip from a chihuahua probably won't even make you bleed whereas a similar level bite from a bigger dog could be quite serious. A chi isn't going to knock over a small child whereas a lab would etc. So training (generally) isn't seen as being as important - pretty much anyone can hold back a lunging chihuahua.

There's also the issue of people treating them like toys - carrying them in handbags and not exercising them or stimulating them properly. A well-bred, socialised and happy chihuahua is a joy to be around - one that's always carried about like a handbag and dressed up - not so much Grin

Try Champdogs website. Good breeders put pedigrees, health testing, what they do with their dogs. I found our latest dog's breeder this way. Ended up with a shortlist of three then did some ringing round. Then an eight month wait for the right puppy.
