So devastated to say goodbye to my girl

My beautiful dog Daisy left us yesterday after a shocking couple of days of illness Sad

She was such a wonderful dog, amazing with children and such a character! I'm absolutely heartbroken.

She was almost 12 and a cancer survivor in remission for 3.5 years. They said the chemo may cause issues down the road and we would likely get 2-3 good years with her before we saw any changes. She started limping last week but was otherwise fine, went to bed as usual although she was unable to climb up the stairs properly and needed help which was unusual for her. When we woke up on Sunday she was unable to stand on her back legs. The vet gave her various medications as she said it looked to be a degenerative nerve disorder or slipped disc but without an MRI she couldn't be sure and conservative treatment was recommended due to Daisy's advanced age so we gave it a go. By Tuesday she was no longer able to feel her back legs and had lost her ability to wee/poo independently so we went back to the vet last night where they confirmed her condition was worsened and there would be very little else they could do for her. We had to make the worst decision weve ever had to make and let her go.

I feel so sad that she is gone and in shock at how fast she went from healthy to so unwell Sad

It has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure to have been her family. She was my shadow and followed me around the house in every waking moment. She was my gorgeous girl and I'm just heartbroken.

So sad. You were there for her through the cancer and the end as well as the good times. She had a good family too!

sweatynoob · 07/06/2023 22:29

So sorry to hear of your loss.

would you like to share a photo of her and tell us about her healthier times? It is heart breaking to lose a pet so dear and I could feel the pain in your post: wishing you all the best at this difficult time for you and tour family.

I saw this quote earlier today, I hope it brings you comfort;

"We need to go first... If we lived longer than you, we would not and could not survive. It’s supposed to be this way. We also need to cross the Rainbow Bridge before you do so that we can be on the other side to greet you when you get there. We wait at home for you here and we wait at Home for you there. It’s just the way it is."

Fallingoffacliff · 07/06/2023 22:31

I'm so very sorry....saying goodbye to a dog is absolutely heartbreaking 💔 just try to take comfort in the fact that was so loved and had a wonderful life with you xx

TheShellBeach · 07/06/2023 22:37

I'm sure that Daisy knew how very much you loved her.

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 07/06/2023 22:39

We lost ours 3 years ago. Still can't put the photos up yet..
Sorry for your loss op.

mosiacmaker · 07/06/2023 22:42

Sending lots of love to Daisy and her wonderful family and I know she’ll be having a wonderful time in doggy heaven xx so sorry for your loss x

Snoooozzze · 07/06/2023 22:43

Thanks for your kind words 💔

here’s some pictures

she was so funny, we have a caravan that we visit regularly and it was her absolute favourite place. She used to sneak off if we weren’t quick enough to take her out and we’d find her absolutely in her element running around on the big exercise field on site! She was a slobbering mess if food was nearby and was very treat led! She absolutely adored my nieces and nephews (my DD too but she’s 17 now so not a kid) and she never stopped wagging her tail at all. She was an absolute dream dog ❤

I am so sorry OP I am going through this myself, 5 weeks since I lost my darling girl, it’s utterly devastating, what is helping me is my memorial area I have created for her, her ashes are in a lovely box and are beside her picture with her collar and some of her fur in a keep sake, I light a candle every night by her picture to flicker on her beautiful face, it helps calm me and keeps her close to me somehow. I have also watched a lot of YouTube videos on pet grief, it makes me feel less alone and also reaching out to people who understand. What beautiful pictures of Daisy, she was clearly so loved.

I'm so sorry for your loss @LadyVictoriaSponge Flowers

We are hoping to be able to save some of her ashes in keep sakes and have requested paw prints as well to keep. We will do a memorial as well I think but I can't look at this yet as all I do is cry Sad

She’s a beautiful dog and looks so happy in those photos. Daisy clearly had an incredible life and i’m sure loved you just as much as you love her.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 07/06/2023 23:50

Thank you, I hope you find some way of getting through the coming days/weeks/ months, my heart goes out to you Flowers

FoodieToo · 08/06/2023 00:03

Daisy is so beautiful. You can see by her expression what an absolute darling she is.
I’m so sorry for your loss .
We are nearly two years on and I still cry for my Poppy.
Dogs are the most amazing creatures . They fill our lives with joy .
TRY to take some comfort from her fantastic life and the fact she was not ill for long x .

SandraTeaspoon · 08/06/2023 00:06

She looks beautiful

Big hugs

Loopyloo159 · 08/06/2023 00:15

Am so sorry. Having a pet PTS is the hardest decision. Just be happy that your doggie had a wonderful life and that your decision was made out of love ❤️
We had our JRT pts sleep in 2019 and I still think about her every day .X

Satsuma2 · 08/06/2023 00:22

I'm so sorry for your loss. RIP Daisy, you will be missed. I've been through this many times for dogs, cats and horses. I'm sure they know how much they are loved. It never gets easier but know that you stopped her suffering. It may seems trite but time is a great healer, one day you will start laughing about all the funny stuff she got up to instead of crying when you think of her.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 08/06/2023 00:38

I'm so sorry OP. I lost my heart dog in October and am only now coming out of the haze of grief. Be kind to yourself and try to reflect on the fact that you gave her her best life. Remember, grief is love that has no place to go - you loved her and she loved you and her life with you.

Moanycowbag · 08/06/2023 09:54

I'm so sorry, she looks so sweet and such fun, I lost my boy beginning of March, and I have framed some pictures of him and kept his collar and tag although they no longer smell of him 😪I sprinkled his ashes in his favourite spot in garden where he used to bask in the sun, it's the hardest part of loving them is having to say goodbye

BMW6 · 08/06/2023 16:22

I'm so sorry OP, Daisy is adorable. I know exactly how you feel, our darling boy (nearly 14) was PTS last Saturday after a sudden illness that started 1 week ago today.

I know we made the right choice but I keep replaying it in my mind and the grief feels overwhelming 💔

This is so so hard and the hole he has left is unfillable.

MuttsNutts · 08/06/2023 17:19

Oh bless you, I am so sorry 💐 What a beautiful girl she was

Daisy sounds like she was loved very much and had the best life. Be grateful that she didn’t suffer and that you were able to do the kindest thing for her despite how hard it was.

Give yourself time to grieve. She is family and it will take time, but eventually the tears will be replaced by happy thoughts and all the lovely memories you have of her.

DforDogWoof · 08/06/2023 18:50

So sorry for your loss. Run free Daisy xxxx

Snoooozzze · 08/06/2023 19:03

@BMW6 so sorry for your loss too it really is so hard isn't it!

I've been over the whole thing so many times in my mind and feel so guilty that I couldn't do anything more for her.

@Moanycowbag so sorry for your loss too. We've decided to scatter her ashes in her favourite place we used to take her near our caravan I think. It's where she was still a pup in an old lady's body and she was so happy there running about and slobbering all over the grass so I think that's the right place

I'm still replaying the whole could I have done more, I couldn't but it still plays on me, and I'm sure you will too, but don't let it eat you up, sounds like a lovely spot to sprinkle her and you can sit and have great memories of her in her favourite place.

BMW6 · 09/06/2023 18:33

Yes the endless replaying and the crashing realisation over and over that he's gone.
I feel like I'm waiting for something to happen - as if he will come home.

@BMW6 it's a dreadful feeling.after my Dad died & we'd had the funeral & a bit more time passed, it finally dawned on me that what I was feeling was that I had 'coped', I'd 'got through it' 'done my bit' & now it was time for him to come back! It hit me like a sledge hammer!

@Snoooozzze Dausy looks so adorable & cuddly! What breed (mix) was she?

you did the hardest thing for you & the most loving thing for er, you didn't drag on her pain. She will be loved & looked after, patiently waiting for her family xx
