Success stories of introducing dog and cat please

I'm currently introducing my dog and partners cat. They've been used to being in the house, albeit in separate rooms, for around a year. They've shared scents etc as the dog isn't always here so each get the run of the house at different times, so are very accepting of one another's presence. Dog seems to understand it's the cats house but the few times we've tried them in the same room the dog has barked and the cat has ran away.

Does anyone have any success stories and tips and tricks to share please?

If they don't live in the same house full-time I think you're always going to struggle.

What breed is the dog? Has it been around cats before and vice versa?

We have a dog and three cats - we just brought the dog in, kept him on a lead and supervised them constantly - we made sure the cats had lots of high up spaces and that the dog was rewarded for being calm.

But the dog was a puppy at the time and had lived with cats at his breeders. Our cats are all farm cats/rescues and had all had prior experience with dogs so I do think that made a difference.

It's normal for the cat to want to escape the dog though - when that happens what are you doing?

Not done it myself but a DF has an ever evolving mixture of DDogs and DCats. I think her record so far was 3 DDogs and 8 DCats.

I'm not sure what she does but they all seem to get along.

Like the PP says, make sure DDcst has plenty of spaces to go to and reward the DDog a lot for ignoring the DCat.

Hopefully it will work out.

Our dog was c 4 years old when we introduced a kitten - bringing it to the house for a few minutes before returning it to it's mother (just one (same) room). Repeating this each day for slightly longer and longer till at c 11 weeks we finally brought the kitten home. They hated each other and at first the kitten just hid from the dog that barked constantly. However, they became best buddies and the dog went from barking constantly at it to sharing the same bed together, curled up together. We distracted the dog and gave it attention letting the kitten slowly come out and explore around.

Saying that the dog still continued to bark at any other cat that dare come into the garden. Have since had 4 / 5 more cats over the years - the dog gets used to them, but still hates other cats.

Good luck.

I've introduced 2 cats to our dog recently, they do now live together full time & get in fine. However, over Xmas my mums dog came to stay & she has never been around cats, always chased them. We kept them apart for a day or so but as we realised that the dog was staying longer (due to mum being ill) we introduced them carefully, being quite firm with the dog. The cat whacked the dog a couple of times to show her who was boss & all was fine

Try not to stress. They will honestly figure it out. You could try the feliway plug ins

We got a puppy when we already had two cats. Has taken a long time to settle down. The cats do run away if chased but less so now. These days more likely the cats just sit still and whack the dog so she knows her place! Can occasionally get on well and will all sunbathe together in the conservatory
