He’s 12 weeks old a chihuahua weighs 600 grams he fell into the car park at Asda he rolled down the side of the seat and landed on his side on the ground he yelped for wha seamed forever but was maybe 15-25 seconds I cuddled him immediately he seams ok but does seam tired but it would be his nap time anyways so maybe I’m just over reading it all. I tried to google it said pups are very robust and bouncy but I’m freaking out he does seam ok he’s walking normally he’s eating and drinking it only just happened 20mins ago he’s barking and alert! Has anyone ever dropped their puppy I’m so worried were they ok ?

Maybe phone the vet? And get a car harness for him so it can't happen again. Hope he's OK.

Sheepsheepeverywhere · 09/05/2023 10:14

Vet check up to ease your mind. But by law now your ddog must be suitable restrained. Seatbelt and harness or a crash tested crate. Not all crates are robust enough...

Stratocumulus · 09/05/2023 10:19

Let him have a quiet restful day today.
Stay vigilant for injury or bruising and follow some of the good advice given by other contributors.
Poor puppy. Peace and quiet today. Keep the kids away from him. He’s been shocked.

ExhaustedPigwidgeon · 09/05/2023 10:22

If this is actually real you need to take it to a vet to check over it and stop letting children handle a tiny puppy

loudbatperson · 09/05/2023 10:23

Phone the vet if you are worried. They are resilient little things, but better safe than sorry.

A car harness is a must! And if at all possible an adult in the back with him.

ejbaxa · 09/05/2023 10:27

He's very young, take him to the vet.

And get a car harness or other sort of car restraint - dogs are supposed to be restrained in a car.

StopGo · 09/05/2023 10:27

Chihuahuas are not robust dogs because they are so tiny. Vet check and suitable dog cage or harness are needed.

Scaryshepherd · 09/05/2023 10:27

You have to secure that puppy in the car.

HerMammy · 09/05/2023 10:29

It is a legal requirement to have your dog secured in a vehicle, not on a child's lap.

Butterflybutterflies · 09/05/2023 10:31

I agree he needs to see a vet and you need to restrain him the car securely.

This.

He's had a big fall, he should see a vet ASAP. He's so small and to fall from such a height, he may well have sustained injuries that are not obvious to the untrained eye.

As PP's have said, he should have been properly restrained. It's an accident that shouldn't have happened.

CaffeinateMeNow · 09/05/2023 10:40

Dogs should not travel on laps.

Take to vet and get a crate for boot/harness.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/05/2023 10:49

100% vet for peace of mind.I say that as the owner of two Chihuahuas.

Hiddenvoice · 09/05/2023 11:07

I would get an appointment at the vet for reassurance and then look into a harness for the car.

Mariposista · 09/05/2023 11:11

Chances are puppy will be fine, but take him to the vet to put your minds at ease.
He is (and will always be) a very small animal, and really needs to travel in a care when in the car. We have a harness for our labrador (used it from 16 weeks when he outgrew the car crate) but a chihuahua is tiny and would get thrown around on one.

Missingmyusername · 09/05/2023 11:14

Aww poor pup. Probably okay, but take for a check up and secure the dog in the car. It’s illegal not to.

Novatherova · 09/05/2023 11:14

I dropped my kitten onto the frame of a sofa as she was wriggling so much to run in to the garden. She was 16 weeks old. She didn't yelp or anything at all so I didn't take her to the vets.

But i didn't ring my MIL in hysterics (I am a dramatic person side note) and she came round. I still feel guilty to this day (2 years later.)

I'd take the vets if yelped etc. They're tiny dogs. My cat has always been a chunk.

Strap your puppy in.

FlipFlops4Me · 09/05/2023 11:15

I have two shih-tzu and always, always harness them if they're in a car. It's just too dangerous not to. A tiny needs to feel absolutely secure and safe. On a small child's lap is neither secure nor safe and please don't let your pup travel like that again.

Shopper727 · 09/05/2023 11:28

Why is a child who can drop a puppy being left responsible for a puppy in a car honestly these tiny dogs are very fragile as pups, my sister has one. Dogs need proper restraints in a car legally then your child isn’t responsible for it and he’s safe. Any responsible dog owner would make sure of that and take the dog to a vet instead of guessing if it’s ok or not!!

SnowAtRedRocks · 09/05/2023 11:31

Ffs.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/05/2023 11:37

You're breaking the law by having your dog unrestrained in the car. Being held on a child's lap is not good enough.

Please take your puppy to the vet and get it an appropriate carrier before you take it in the car again. You are incredibly lucky it didn't break a leg or run off into the road.

Snoken · 09/05/2023 11:44

You absolutely have to take the puppy to the vets. He might be bleeding internally. If you think of the size of the dog, versus the hight of the fall, it would probably be the equivelent of you falling from the 3rd floor or something. Yelping for 20 seconds is serious.

God it makes me angry when people treat living animals as toys. Secure him when in the car. Don't let children handle the dog.

Bluebells1970 · 09/05/2023 11:47

I'd have driven straight to the vet as an emergency. It's a living being, not a toy for your children.

LovelyJublee · 09/05/2023 11:51

Vets.

Dogs may be robust there's a big variety in size and what may not be a big fall to lab puppy will be more dangerous to something so tiny and the fact your dog has helped suggests it injured itself and it might seem fine now but my vet told me adrenaline can make dogs mask pain and serious injuries always apparent.

There is no way I would not be going to the vets. I don't know know if you've driven with the unsecured and others have mention that, so I'll suggest if it's something like you've been responsible and the dog was correctly restrained until you'd parked then you need to be the one responsible for getting the dog unrestrained and not the child.

I hope dog is ok

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 09/05/2023 11:54

Is he usually strapped in? I wonder if he had been strapped in while the car was moving and you were getting out? So I won’t judge you on the lack of restraint.

Take him to be checked just to be on the safe side.
