He’s 12 weeks old a chihuahua weighs 600 grams he fell into the car park at Asda he rolled down the side of the seat and landed on his side on the ground he yelped for wha seamed forever but was maybe 15-25 seconds I cuddled him immediately he seams ok but does seam tired but it would be his nap time anyways so maybe I’m just over reading it all. I tried to google it said pups are very robust and bouncy but I’m freaking out he does seam ok he’s walking normally he’s eating and drinking it only just happened 20mins ago he’s barking and alert! Has anyone ever dropped their puppy I’m so worried were they ok ?

Sorry but this is why chihuahuas are not recommended for people with young children. They are very fragile, and children can't be trusted to care for them properly without supervision, especially at just 12 weeks old!

You seriously need to be more cautious or find a more suitable family for this tiny dog. The dog will end up with aggression toward children if they keep being too rough with it

Shoot4theMoon · 09/05/2023 12:07

He does have a car hanresss but I had been in the shop and my child wanted to stay in the car with the puppy while I went onto the shop for a couple of bits so we unclipled him form the harness so he could sit on my child’s knee for the few mins I was in the shop but at all other times he’s strapped in when I’m driving

Golden retriever puppy? Probably fine. A 600g chihuahua puppy? Nope, needs seeing. They are incredibly fragile. I've known even adult ones end up with broken bones they've basically given themselves behaving like idiots in restraints.

You've given your child responsibility for something more fragile than a newborn human. It's entirely on you, you chose something this fragile and you need to take responsibility going forward. Need to get a crate.

Shoot4theMoon · 09/05/2023 12:13

@Arewehumanorarewecupboards yes he has a car harness and a clip that fastens into the car so he’s always strapped in but I was going to it the shop and my older child asked to stay in the car with the puppy and have him on his knee while I was in the shop and when we came out of the shop my other child opened the car door where my child was sat with the puppy and my child wasn’t holding the puppy and he fell. I don’t know why everyone suddenly thinks I was driving while the car door was opened by someone from the outside of the car I did say I was in an Asda car park when it happened but the car had been stationary 10 mins as I’d been in the shop for milk bread and some other bits

But your answer to that should have been no. Sure, stay in car with puppy, but with puppy still safely restrained.

popsypretty · 09/05/2023 12:15

Take him to get checked over. My gran dropped her chihuahua/poodle cross when she was a puppy and she ended up with a broken leg.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 09/05/2023 12:15

Vets.
Puppies have heavier heads in comparison to the rest of their bodies, so he needs to be checked quickly to make sure there is no damage in case his head hit the floor before his body.

piper678 · 09/05/2023 12:17

Your child has clearly demonstrated they can't be trusted to look after the puppy so I hope you never leave them unsupervised again until dog is fully grown.

Newuser82 · 09/05/2023 12:24

If he is walking, eating drinking and seems ok in himself he will probably be fine. Just keep a close eye on him and any concerns give the vet a call.

Newuser82 · 09/05/2023 12:27

And with the best will in the world accidents can happen. Goodness me how many posts I've seen on here saying people have dropped their baby or put the baby on the bed or something and they have rolled off. Doesn't mean the child can't hold the puppy ever again!

justanothernamechangemonday · 09/05/2023 12:32

How old is the child?

DogDream · 09/05/2023 12:50

Slightly aside from your Op but as a fellow small dog owner: it took me a while to swap to the ‘treat it like a big dog’ mindset, but my life (and my dog’s life!) would have been easier if I had right from day one. Don’t let your children manhandle, etc. Don’t treat your chi differently to eg a staffie in that regard. I’d really recommend taking your children to puppy training & young handler training sessions. Both they and your dog will get a huge amount out of it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/05/2023 12:57

You left your child alone in the car park while you went into the shops

I would Hope an older child like secondary school and not a toddler

Tho saying that surely if old enough to stay in car alone they should be able to hold a dog safely

Either way def take to the vet. That breed is small and it's a huge way for them to fall 🥲

Escapetothecatshome · 09/05/2023 13:04

I have a chihuahua, mind you quite a fat one so she has a bit of padding but she has fallen out the car from the dog bed she had her paws on the door and when I opened it came tumbling out in quite a ungraceful heap landing on the road. She was okay. Thankfully
With chihuahuas you have to be so careful they are very prone to accidents best to get a dog bed and seatbelt thing for her.

If she's bouncing around doing okay just keep an eye on her, and use this as a lesson learned x

knobheeeed · 09/05/2023 13:31

Take the puppy to the vet.
Puppy needs to be restrained inside the car.
You shouldn't be leaving a child in the car with the puppy while you shop.

Sweetleftfood · 09/05/2023 13:42

Another classic dog board shit show! BINGO
No one is allowed to own dogs - Check
Kids are kids until they are 18 (and shouldn't be near a dog) - Check (And even then they are probably not suitable to look after your dog)
No one has ever had any accident/something has never ever happened to their dog - Check (perfect dog owners align)
Wrong breed - check

I can totally see you are worried but as some of the sensible have said, check with a vet and you probably have a phone line through your insurance, so may be worth calling that and see what they say

pookiedoodlepuppy · 09/05/2023 13:57

When I was a child I got my first puppy , we took her to country park for Easter picnic , big place lots of grass . My Yorkie puppy was belted by a football two men were playing with , the screaming was as you described too .She was fine but it was really horrible . Puppies are incredibly tough I'm sure your puppy will be fine .

Season0fTheWitch · 09/05/2023 14:50

If your child is young enough to open a door without considering others/the puppy they shouldn't be left alone in a car...

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/05/2023 14:57

My older child asked to stay in the car with the puppy and have him on his knee while I was in the shop and when we came out of the shop my other child opened the car door where my child was sat with the puppy and my child wasn’t holding the puppy and he fell.

So your child has proven that they can't be trusted alone with the puppy. You are incredibly lucky that your puppy wasn't injured and didn't run off and get clipped by a car.

Next time you need to leave the puppy at home if you need to go to the shops.

From the title it sounds like her other child opened the car door not the child holding it on his lap.

LovelyJublee · 09/05/2023 16:48

I agree though that the kids need a bit of chat about making sure puppy is secure before doors are opened and holding the puppy if it's sitting on lap while stationary.

It probably is easier to leave dog at home in future when popping to shops, the weather is changing and there's parts of the day where I live where it's too warm for my dog to be left with no air con so I'd get in habit of leaving dog at home now

Because people don’t read properly and jump to conclusions. How old is the dc? I assume as left in the car that it’s not a toddler?
Accidents happen! One of my dogs is 6 and fell trying to jump on the kitchen counter, never done it before!
Have you had him checked?

The child with the dog didn’t open the door though.

JaimeLannister · 09/05/2023 19:33

My golden retriever jumped out my arms at 11 weeks old and landed on his side. He cried briefly. I cried for much longer! I took him to the vets, where he bounced around the room but I felt better having him checked.

Badgeringabout · 09/05/2023 20:02

Can you actually get car harnesses that tiny that they fit puppy chis?

Anyway OP - vets for sure.
