9 month old dog peed inside 5 times today

We have a 9 month old dachshund who we rehomed 2 months ago. We trained him to use bells to let us know when he needs to go outside and it's been going okay, maybe the odd accident but I'm talking a few a week (he came to us with absolutely no training and would just pee where and whenever) so we was happy with the progress. Today be used the bell a few times and also had the back door open half the day but he decided to just pee inside. He went out about 3 times (used the bells once).

I feel so deflated and mortified.

Has it been raining all day with you?

You need to encourage him to go out and go out with him especially if it is "bad" according to dachshund weather

Has he been neutered? Mine got worse rather than better. Once he was neutered he was immediately better and it stopped!

Dachshunds are funny things. To him if it’s cosy and warm inside, of course he’d rather wee inside!

Rather than have the door open so they have the option of indoor or outdoor you may need to ‘order’ him to wee (ie send him out specifically to wee).

Don’t be disheartened, just go back to basics: regular toilet trips with you giving whatever “go wee” command you give, and a massive happy fuss once they’ve done it. He’ll get back on track.

Realise the end of my post contradicts, he went out a few times (3 times) and didn't use the bell a few times, just the bell once today.

Hasn't actually been raining today! Was raining bad yesterday and he still did better than today Sad

Don’t rush to do this. Research shows they need this to be left til much much later (if at all) to help avoid IVDD. When you’re ready to start thinking about it there’s lots of research out there you can look into.

Many of that breed of dog hates going out in the rain. My friend's is 6 years old and completely refuses and pees in the house. One theory is that they don't like the sound of rain, it upsets them

Riverlee · 08/05/2023 21:52

Mine used to wee more insides when it was raining.

Newpeep · 08/05/2023 21:52

Ditch the bell. Keep putting him out every half hour to an hour. Tiny puppy stuff. Praise like mad. Leave the door shut too else the garden is an extension of the house (and vice versa!)

I prefer dogs on my schedule. I’d become my dogs butler if I gave her a bell 😂

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 23:20

Don't leave the door open!

If you leave the door open and there's no physical barrier between inside and out, they don't always understand where they're supposed to go.

Badgeringabout · 09/05/2023 17:01

He is a non house trained puppy so treat him as such as a previous OP has said. He needs careful reward based training and taking out very frequently.
I would not be using a bell.
Not sure why you are 'mortified'? He is still learning.

I left it for quite a while, and thought I might not do it at all, but in the end he was marking all over the house and on people’s things in public. We went camping and he ran up the beach marking bags on the sand. It got so much in the house I decided it was worth trying. It was immediately better as soon as he was done. We have never had it since.

OrlandointheWilderness · 11/05/2023 07:04

A bell? Is this not complicating things somewhat?! You are trying to train him to do two things now not one - ring a bell to open door and toilet outside!
Ditch the bell. Take him out every half an hour as you would a puppy. I use the command 'hurry up'. As soon as he goes big praise and fuss.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 11/05/2023 07:09

Bless him! I expected this to be a dachshund thing. They have a rep for finding toilet training hard. I wonder why though… 🧐 My only thought is the increased relative distance between their two ends?? Maybe decreases the strength of the signal? 🤔

redbigbananafeet · 11/05/2023 07:24

How long and how far has he been walked that day?

LadyJ2023 · 11/05/2023 07:54

Bells never heard of that lol. Take your puppy out regularly and reward when he does pee. Simples lol
