We've got an 8 month old wired haired dachshund and we love him to bits but the problem is he is stinking the house out all I can smell is dog, we have throws on the sofa that I wash 2x weekly, I wash the sofa weekly His blanket, teddies & bed every two weeks it's horrible to say but I hate my house now I have a dog, what can I do to possibly get the strong smell of dog out of my carpets and house

Your dog needs to see a vet. You won't solve the problem any other way.

Some breeds smell a bit more "doggy" the others but they definitely shouldn't stink.

Most strong smells in animals are linked to allergies, skin/ear infections or dietary issues and intolerances so I would get him fully checked over and allergy tested.

How’s his aim when he wees? Some small dogs have a tendency to wee on their chest/stomach and/or front legs (although I think that’s less likely with a Dachshund. That then transfers to soft furnishings and dog beds etc, which end up stinky.

I would get him checked over by the vet and if nothing is wrong there, try buying some biodegradable dog wipes and giving him a quick clean when he’s been for a wee.

Aren't they just a particularly doggy smelling breed? My DA had one who we used to look after from time to time and I remember always giving him a bath when he arrived and him smelling exactly the same the next day.

We're at the vets for two weekly steroid shots as he's an itchy dog but he's been tested for mites, obviously he's gets his worming and flea tablets monthly, skin scraps, hair plucked and there's nothing that coming back off any test so I'm going to ask the vet this week if there's anymore I can do about his smell, we've also agreed to rip up the carpet and put hardwood floor down so hopefully that will help but thank you for the suggestions x

It may be an infection or something to do with the steroids as they can leave them pre-disposed to things like that unfortunately.

Does he go to the groomers , if not take him and then buy some of the dog perfume to spray him every day , mine is currently using the dog version of Sauvage and I give him a quick spritz after his morning walk which is the only time he usually smells a bit doggy , it lasts all day .

Get rid of carpet and rugs. Hard floors are much easier to manage with a stinky dog. Windows open as much as possible. I have a smelly dog. No vet needed. His coat is whiney, ears and eyes fine, teeth fine. If I sniff him up close, he doesn't smell but he just seems to emit this pong. It drives me nuts. Rugs stank within 2 weeks and so they went in the bin and not replaced.

@Floralnomad yes he goes to the groomers every six weeks and ohh where do I purchase it ??

We had a long hair male, Phalane, their urine does smell.,and of course gets over their coat. If it's the dander oil, laminate flooring now,no carpet. You have to vacuum everywhere they go, including getting rid of the hair under beds, furniture.wash floors at least every couple of days. Would never have another male.

Please do you possibly have a link for the spray?

We buy ours from the groomers . It’s the O’K9 Savage one we are using at the moment , but I also like the Ultra Ego by Wow grooming products .
