Dry food for labrador pup

Hi, we have a nearly 5 month old labrador puppy. I wanted to get some recommendations on dry puppy food to go with his Butchers puppy meat.

He currently has Pets at Home Step Up to Naturals. He loves it but he does massive poos and they are not really firm so wondered what other brands people recommend. Happy to pay mid-high for a good quality food.

Thanks

I have a 12 month old lab and he is on Forthglade Cold Pressed Food which I mix with a little warm water. He was previously on Royal Canin and he had wet slimy poo (although his litter mates still all do very well on it). He loves it, has a lovely shiny coat and his poo is firm and easy to pick up.

Wellbeloved turkey n rice as she has a sensitive tum to a couple of things but seems happy enough on this for the last year. But the price just keeps climbing this year I suppose like everything. I looked at couple of working dog mixes as she’s a LabX at a similar price point and they had higher protein content so we may try a small bag. Think it was skinners I’ll have to check.

Massive soft poos can be a sign of over-feeding rather than an intolerance to the food.

Are you sure he's being fed the correct amount and not being given too many treats and tidbits?

I always know when my beagle has been a bit over fed by the size of his poo 🙈

You could definitely be right about that as well as we are doing lots of off lead training. Also found out that my husband has been feeding him to much.

I have tried loads (fussy dog with a tendency to loose bowels) and have settled on Canagan kibble (the highland mix) . Orjen was too rich and gave her the runs although it's rated pretty much THE best.

I also use JR pate... brilliant stuff and can be used as a complete food, but I chop it into tiny pieces for training and then use whatever she hasn't eaten to top up the kibble.. its pure meat... not dry exactly but not wet food either.

Our 10 year old lab has been on millies wolfheart since he was a pup.

@Nowthereistwo it's difficult when you're training to make sure they get the right amount!

Either weigh out his dry food in the morning and take all his treats from that, or reduce the amount of food he's getting in his meals to account for the extra training treats.

My puppy wasn't interested in his normal dry food on walks so we had to cut his food right down to accommodate it.

We use a Tupperware box each morning it’s filled with the kibble for that day that way it doesn’t matter who feeds dog the portion control is there. She’s a perm hungry LabX food hoover but is still ok weight wise… she has the best please feed me eyes and drools when we are eating our dinner she sits watching quietly in return for a small treat when we finish eating.

Another vote for a Millie’s Wolfheart - my golden retriever had terrible upset tummy for his first year. Sickness as well as sloppy poo. The All About Dog Food website suggested MW riverside mix and he’s literally never had a problem since. Four years later now!

BigBundleOfFluff · 07/05/2023 14:56

Exactly same as what @PuppyMonkey said.
Millie's wolf heart for my goldie also solved her sloppy poo issue. I hope they never stop making it!

Yes. Our Lab pup is on MW. The change in her since she started on it is amazing. No flakes of dry skin, no wind, no scratching, no more Mr Whippy poos. Her coat gleams to the extent that people stop and comment on how shiny it is.
