Please, please do your research. I’ve just cried for 20 mins at the state of this shitty country & the way we treat/use animals.

A rescue I follow & support takes in puppy mill dogs & they’re so broken. Some just walk round in small circles because they’ve lived in a 1m shed for 5 years churning out puppies, some run, hide & shake on sight of a human, often wetting themselves in fear. They’re so shut down.

Please look beyond the cute puppy & find out how it’s parents have been treated.

Sorry to post & I’m not meaning to preach but it upsets me so much.

People are selfish, they want the cute puppy that they want. They often either don't give where it's coming from a lot of thought or they convince themselves that they're saving it rather than encouraging more of the same.

Tealsofa · 21/04/2023 17:04

why have you "just cried for 20 mins at the state of this shitty country & the way we treat/use animals."

Anyone who cares enough to look beyond the puppy farms will do their investigation those who dont wont - theres no point crying about it

DuchessOfSausage · 21/04/2023 17:07

The people buying the puppy want a cute puppy and probably give no thought to the reality of owning a dog.

Unicornsaregreat · 21/04/2023 17:07

People want what they want & they want it now. People are selfish.

I have two supposedly intelligent friends who got puppies that scream puppy farm to me. One of them came via Facebook - she allegedly saw the “mum” dog but it could have easily been a pretend mum (while the real mum was in a cage somewhere).

I feel like both my friends turned a blind eye and didn’t do proper research because they wanted the cute puppy. I’m disappointed in them.

I cried because of a dog I’ve just read about & the state it’s in which lead me to cry a bit more about how frequent & common it is for unscrupulous breeders to abuse animals for money. Is there any point crying about anything? You could say no but it still happens.

I also know people who “rescued” clearly very traumatised dogs from overseas that clearly have issues that they don’t have the time or knowledge to deal with. And they preach on about how bloody amazing they are because they “adopt don’t shop” even though the dogs clearly in distress and would have been better off being left where it was / pts as it’s aggressive, can’t be walked off lead / can’t be socialised

I would cry too. Because I have empathy. Please don't berate people for having strong feelings about animal cruelty.

I've fostered dogs from abroad and now think it's well meaning but fundamentally flawed

I think a lot of people are like your friends unfortunately. My friend did it too, I was sure it was a puppy farm.

We reported two puppy farms in our search for a puppy. It was subtle but the red flags were there. One required internet digging. We got that one shut down with help from the council.

All KC registered. All looked very legitimate. Most people wouldn’t have seen through them.

We bought a lovely, well bred, socialised and raised pup from a slightly chaotic but well experienced breeder. We’d been trying to rescue for two years. She had pups available as some of her waiting list had gone elsewhere. She’s turning into a delight as she matures.

Our first bought dog or cat after many rescues. We weren’t going to put money into the hands of a dealer or farmer.

bondsy · 21/04/2023 19:08

Stuff like this makes me cry too. It's heartbreaking.
Some people aren't as clued up on puppy farms so it's really important to keep sharing far and wide, so good job on posting on here. Hopefully it will make people think before buying a puppy to do research.

My dog is a rescue stud dog and he wasn't treated very well. He is so spoiled now though.

What gave the initial impression it was legitimate and what were the subtle signs that it wasn't?

One of them:

KC reg. Mum and pups viewable. In good condition. Private house. Emails and calls all fine. When we arrived it was too clean. The mum was stressed. It obviously wasn’t a doggy house. ‘Breeder’ wasn’t dogs owner. Some guff about helping friend out. Mum and pups in pen in kitchen. Very clean. ‘Breeder’ got mums age wildly wrong. Didn’t know what a KC name was when I queried about dads pedigree. Paperwork had errors compared to the KC site. No relationship between mum and ‘breeder ‘. I asked about prey drive. ‘Breeder’ didn’t know what that meant. Pups were terrified of us.

Other loads of good communications, KC reg. Pictures and videos. Day before viewing we called to confirm and was told btw mum wouldn’t be there as had gone on holiday with friend but we could see pups. Woman said they could arrange to see her then was shushed in the background by a man who said they’d gone abroad. That was less subtle tbh.

They were just two of many we contacted through the KC and champ dogs.

We were also on two waiting lists for over a year with no contact and communication when we checked in with the breeders.

Im a hard faced cow and will walk away if it’s not right. Not many can or will. I do t know what happened to those mums and pups. It still haunts me a bit. I hope they are having a good life.

You cried about how people in this country treat animals?? really??? I understand your upset for this particular issue but have you been to Portugal, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, any Eastern European country?? There's absolutely no comparison!!

Yes I did because actually, we treat animals terribly in this country. Yes places like Greece, Spain etc beat us but to say I shouldn’t cry about animal abuse in this country as it’s worse elsewhere is just ridiculous.

That’s like saying no one should be upset about deprived children uk because children in Africa are more deprived.

Also, not that I have to justify my upset to you but I cried there too. This is why I don’t holiday in any of those places.

That’s awful. I reported Kelly’s Kennels & had suspicions about another one. There are lots in Wales & Burnley too.

Glad you got yours from an experienced breeder (even if chaotic!)

I have an 11yo Shih Tzu that I got off FB when he was 2 - the owner was pregnant & wanted him gone quickly. It was a friend of my then boyfriend. I have absolutely loved the 9 years we’ve had together.

I wish I could like a post on here. I sadly agree that KC reg means nothing. Sadly puppy farming isn’t always obvious and people don’t want to dig and find out the truth. They want the cute puppy NOW!
I have two dogs I bought as pups. I see myself as partly responsible for the fate of their parents. All loved and cherished dogs who live a great life and not made to have litter after litter.

Not alone it doesn’t. But I’d still always go KC as you can see the lines of the parents, breeding coefficients and health tests - our pups parents were fully tested and she had the only test pups could have which really is belt and braces! Without it it’s the word of the breeders which for most means less than KC registration!

lidlbrownjug · 21/04/2023 20:12

I got my pup from a breeder I've known for 42 years. That breeder breeds one breed and only one breed and the lines are checkable (my dogs grandfather won best of breed at crufts). I was on a waiting list for 2 years. My previous dog was bred by my mother. The breed is now at risk.

I have a friend who has a rescue she got from abroad and the whole thing makes me uneasy. The way the rescue operation works makes me uncomfortable.

I've also reported a puppy farm that is always on Facebook and breeding lots of different breeds. The council did nothing.
