Please, please do your research. I’ve just cried for 20 mins at the state of this shitty country & the way we treat/use animals.

A rescue I follow & support takes in puppy mill dogs & they’re so broken. Some just walk round in small circles because they’ve lived in a 1m shed for 5 years churning out puppies, some run, hide & shake on sight of a human, often wetting themselves in fear. They’re so shut down.

Please look beyond the cute puppy & find out how it’s parents have been treated.

Sorry to post & I’m not meaning to preach but it upsets me so much.

The issue we have is that a lot of people want a dog (whether some of them should have a dog is another issue, though most of the dogs I know are well looked after). It's hard to get a rescue if you have cats or DC or lack a high fence or don't feel equipped with the time, experience, cash and patience to take on a dog with complex issues. So, puppies. Crudely put, it's a supply and demand issue.

Over the past 30 or 40 years 'letting our dog have just one litter' has become really frowned upon, but I'd argue that families doing that (with a health tested stud and taking vet advice and so on) would be a lot better than puppy farming or the people who churn out endless 'colour' litters in their kitchens. I'm not advocating a return to random litters all over the show with loads being dumped in cardboard boxes at the side of the road (the start in life of one of the best dogs I ever knew), but maybe some sort of regulated system so that anyone buying knows that a basic minimum standard has been met. It would widen the pool of breeders and help with genetic diversity within breeds, too.

Most people just want a nice, stable, happy, healthy pet. If a dog has been successful as a pet, breeding her (or him) would seem a sensible way to get more of the same.

ReadtheReviews · 22/04/2023 09:08

Bumping because people are so stupid and selfish and just want a designer breed and dont care where from. Equally bad are the quick buck at home breeders who breed parents with children, sibling with sibling.

Totally agree with all of this. It’s just a free for all currently.

Exactly this. Someone near my got a lovely cavalier & at only 2, she’s always at the vets & the vet confirmed it’s bad breeding.

What a nasty post tealsofa. I can hardly stand watching or reading about how cruel people can be to animals, or I would cry too.
Why do people like you come onto boards to be vile?

Crying for 20 minutes is excessive, its not a nasty post

I'm not being vile, I am being a grown up - did you want me to come along and pat you on the head and say there there?

Tealsofa · 22/04/2023 14:17

@Minjeata

I have just looked at my post, and really cannot understand what you found so "nasty and vile"

Tealsofa · Yesterday 17:04
why have you "just cried for 20 mins at the state of this shitty country & the way we treat/use animals."

Anyone who cares enough to look beyond the puppy farms will do their investigation those who dont wont - theres no point crying about it

You are rude. If I or anyone wants to cry for 20 minutes then that’s ok. You might’ve cried for 20 mins about something that I don’t think is worthy (doubt with you being so grown up) but I accept that people can & should do what the want!

But more to the point, I didn’t put this on Aibu, nor did I ask if my upset was ok or not.

If that’s all you’ve taken from my post, you’ve missed the point.

YANBU. It really saddens me. I wish people put more thought into it more broadly. I know things happen but I see a lot of posts and things about rehoming and many cases (yes, I know not all cases) could be avoided if people did their research and gave it serious consideration - even dog-sat for friends while on holiday to realise they actually require a lot of work and time to give them a great life.

Absolutely. Spaniel Are d is a prime example of this. 99% are being rehomed due to getting a spaniel when they’re elderly & realising it’s too much, massive amount due to lack of training, fair few haven’t researched the breed adequately or even at all & one the other day was ‘because his girlfriend was moving in & she has 3 dogs’. Completely let down by their owners.

Again, I wasnt rude, I was stating how I felt about you crying for 20 minutes.

If I was going to be rude, I would have offered you a grip (in time old mn tradition)

If you are upset with things in the world, put that energy to good use and do something about it - but dont sit and cry.

@StarDolphins @Tealsofa
This post was a good post about the tragedy of puppy farms but had now turned into a slanging match about whether someone was rude or not and whether it's ok to cry about puppy farms.
That's a shame because the point is "think, research and DON'T BUY FROM PUPPY FARMS."
Which is a worthwhile post if it stops one person doing it.

BigBundleOfFluff · 22/04/2023 21:49

It's a good post OP and a timely one too as we are heading into puppy season. I was fortunate snd the breeder of my pup was a friend of a friend and I've dog sat my pups older sister. They thought of being taken in by a puppy farm stressed me out, I like to believe people.
I think anyone buying a fashionable breed - doodle mix or frenchie etc has to be extra cautious. There was a good documentary on lockdown pups on iplayer recently and that's worth a watch. I really can't remember the name of it I'm afraid.

Thank you & yes that’s all I wanted to achieve & like you say, if 1 person does a bit more research then it’s been positive😃

Thank you, I will have a look for that documentary. I got offered a young couple clerpoo at the end of last year that was a lockdown pup I thought so hard to try & make it work but I just couldn’t bring a new dog in when my dog is so used to his family as it is. If he wasn’t happy, I’d have been so sad for him & he has to come first.

I didnt beat anyone, I asked why a grown up cried for 20 minutes

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 24/04/2023 16:16

I would cry too. Because I have empathy. Please don't berate people for having strong feelings about animal cruelty.

Stuff like this makes me cry too. It's heartbreaking.
Some people aren't as clued up on puppy farms so it's really important to keep sharing far and wide, so good job on posting on here. Hopefully it will make people think before buying a puppy to do research.

My dog is a rescue stud dog and he wasn't treated very well. He is so spoiled now though.

Absolutely. This is a big business that shitty human beings make A LOT of money from. So they can be clever at hiding the signs especially from people who aren't as clued up. And I think if you've never owned a dog you are definitely less clued up.

Suzi888 · 24/04/2023 16:22

Breeding needs to stop. We have too many unwanted dogs and puppies already.

So many dogs have major, costly issues these days.

Too many people want the puppy, not the dog. They’ve not a clue that a labradoodle requires grooming and that grooming costs money.
Vets bills, sleepless nights, the tie, the walking, the boarding etc.

People don’t care, they throw them away, dump them, have them put down- they don’t give a damn.

My heart bleeds for the unwanted and abused animals we bring in to the world for financial gain.
