Garden and muddy footprints everywhere!

When we had our puppy, we built a 2ft fence along the patio so that she could only walk on the slabbed area when outside on her own. As she is now 10 months and bigger, she has learnt how to hurdle our 2ft fence and is now running around the grass every time she goes onto the patio. Lovely as it is to see her embracing the grassy area.....her muddy footprints everywhere is driving me nutty!

We have bought a couple of noodle-style dog rugs for by the door but this only seems to help a little bit.

What are your set ups for your gardens?? Do you have any words of wisdom to help with this? I'm seriously considering paving off a lot of the grass to help, as my kids are getting older and playing on the garden less. She is a fluffy little thing and her paws seem to retain a lot of water and mud.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Don't let her in and out without wiping her paws.
I have always had dogs and have a turtle mat by each door plus an old towel.....l go through, d/dog is not allowed to push through...and then l bring him onto the turtle mat and clean his paws. Every time.

Make the fence higher or keep her on a long line so she can’t reach the grass

also ensure her feet are wiped before she comes back in

Vileda spray mop. No other advice.

Not particularly helpful but my pup actually wipes her own feet on the back door mat which deals with the worst of it then I just use a spray mop if there's any excess. She started doing it herself when she was about 9-10wks old after we'd had rain and I'd dried her feet a few times with a towel, she obviously discovered that she's a princess and doesn't want dirty wet feet. 😂

Wipes her own feet 😂 You're so lucky!!! Mine likes the muck and mess 😭

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm going to try training her to sit and let me dry her feet when she comes in. She's very touchy with her paws though so I might be fighting a losing battle.

Yes it's hilarious, still makes me laugh and I've seen it a thousand times, she's only 9months.

She scratches and scuffs all 4 feet on the back door mat. After she'd been doing it by herself for a few days I started using a cue word as she did it and now she does it when I tell her to as well.

@BeansOnToast32 oh I love the idea of my dog wiping her feet!! Wishful thinking on my part!

@Whyisitdarkalready yes paws are very sensitive, use lots of treats!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 13/04/2023 07:24

Mine has to wait by the door to get his paws wiped 🐾

We needed bribery/treats at first but now he just stands and waifs and looks sad 😂

Clymene · 13/04/2023 07:29

Mine doesn't leave the mat until his paws have been wiped. Annoyingly the cat refuses to be trained.
