For our dog we used Red Dingo harness, lead and collar while he was a puppy. Relatively inexpensive and decent quality - recommended by a friend.

Now he’s fully grown we’ve upgraded to Ruffwear which are pretty pricey but good quality.

Please please don’t use a retractable lead; you only need a quick google of the horror stories.

Bed - something machine washable, especially if it’s a young pup!

For the car we have a seatbelt loop that the main seatbelt goes through and then clips to his regular harness

  • Puppy sized kong toy. I push cooked chicken into it and she loves getting it out
  • I find removing toys for a week or so, then swapping them keep things more interesting than having ALL the toys and things out at once.
  • I also bought a licky mat and snuffle mat, but my dog is a poodle X and will happily leave food sit there until she is hungry. She doesn't woof it down like other breeds, so these devices were only short lived.
  • I bought a grooming kit from aldi which included brushes, scissors and nail clippers- very handy for trimming sharp, little nails!
  • Tick remover
  • The number of your vet and the out of hours emergency vet within easy reach of the dogs vaccination certificates/info if ever needed to grab and go

Buy cheap things or second hand off Vinted as they grow out off the harnesses and collars so quickly, then invest in something decent when they are almost fully grown.

My CKC crosses were full height by about 7/8 months I think and then took till a year to fill out, I currently have a Shih Tzu puppy and I have brought a cheap mesh harness off amazon to use as I know he will be out of it in weeks, and I still had the puppy collar and lead the my previous two dogs had so he is currently wearing those, but little puppies grow like weeds in the first few months home, what I would also recommend is a cuddly toy with heart beat simulator as that seems to have helped my boy settle in his crate and sleep for good stretches and he will go and pull it out of the crate and bring it into the sitting room if he gets sleepy and wants comfort during the day.

This is the harness Mesh Harness XS

Cool mat- once my puppy learnt that it wasn't a toilet 🙄she ended up loving it and would lie all over it when too hot in her bed

I've bought lots of bits from aldi/lidl when they have a pet week and never found any issues with them

https://www.indigocollartags.com/ we like these instead of dangly dog tags

We also like Wolters collars. Basic but wear well, we have had the same 3 collars in different colours for 9 years now, they go through washing machine well. Available on the same site, but also elsewhere.

Vet bed is great - we like the Bronte Glen stuff. Buy in huge rolls and cut sizes to fit and it doesn't matter too much if they chew it. Wash 2-3 times when needed then bin and use another bit.

Millies Wolfheart food. Used it for 10 years now and ddog never had any problems with it.

Kong toys are usually good.

Good insurance!

  • incontinence bed protectors instead of puppy pads (cheaper & 100% washable at 60 -90°C) also good for car underneath the vetbed!
  • bum bag (especially in Summer) for poo bags, treats & toys= just grab & go!
  • good dog trainer/ group for help, laughter and tears
  • Kennel cleaner for accidents (also good as hard floor, dog bed & soft furnishings cleaner!)
  • brush/ comb, getting your dog used to grooming (even with short hair) has all kinds of benefits!
DforDogWoof · 14/04/2023 16:06

Red Dingo for me too. Washes well, great quality, fab colours and designs and the harnesses are adjustable and are not restrictive to a pup or dog's movement, like many more trendy harnesses are unfortunately https://www.dfordog.co.uk/red-dingo.html
