So sorry for your loss. Crossbreeds like that are so unpredictable, plus it would be extremely hard to find a reputable breeder (if at all) unfortunately.

I'm so sorry for your loss @mumof31968. Being unexpected must be hard to deal with.

I know it's hard but could you wait a short while and give yourself some time to grieve. I know a couple of families who have bought a puppy soon after losing a DDog and both have sorry tales to tell.

Suzi888 · 10/04/2023 18:57

I’m sorry from your loss.

Have you looked at a rescue instead? I agree, give yourself awhile to grieve. A new puppy is hard work and will have a different personality to the dog who has passed. You may then regret having the puppy. Wait just a few weeks, look at different breeds, think about what you want and what you can offer.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 10/04/2023 18:59

Maybe wait for a while to grieve, then contact local rescue centres?

Getting a new puppy straight away may not be the best thing for them, or you.

mumof31968 · 10/04/2023 19:08

I have always had dogs for many years.

100% agree, sorry for your loss, I totally understand the pain, but perhaps give yourself some time to comes to terms with your loss. It’s a totally different ballgame, having a pup when you have lost an older dog, you do forget how difficult pups can be. I mean this kindly, £500 is quite a low budget for a pup, make sure you are buying a healthy, well bred pup, otherwise you could be in for more heartbreak. Consider a rescue, if a slightly older dog may be more appealing. Good luck OP.

Is it a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix? If you are unsure of the breed, could you join a FB group for Pomchi owners and ask for the good and bad aspects of the breed?

I think I'd also want to know why the breeder still had the puppy at 13 weeks.

mumof31968 · 10/04/2023 21:03

My other dog was a chi cross.it's a private seller.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

£500 really isn't a lot for a puppy, and at 13 weeks I'd wonder why the breeder still has it.

A week is far too short a time to find a puppy. If £500 is your budget have you also included insurance and vet costs? I know you say you've always had dogs, but the budget makes it seem like finances could be tough.

bunnygeek · 11/04/2023 11:08

I have a PomChi, she was free from a friend going through a messy divorce and she's already 7 years old. She adores people and cuddles but she can be stubborn, she's a fair weather dog, and reactive, especially to other dogs.

I second the reasons why a breeder still has a puppy but the bottom has fallen out of the puppy market as we go into a cost of living crisis instead. Has the breeder done full health tests before she bred? The cross will be prone to the same health problems from both the Pom and Chi side, including patellar luxation. I'm not sure what the history was behind the breeder of mine, but I suspect something dodgy as a teenage daughter just came home with a puppy one day. As you do.

I would expect if a breeder still has a 13 week old puppy, they would have done/started vaccinations, toilet training and lots of socialisation.

With cross breeds you can never pinpoint average temperaments etc as they are so random and the cross breeding could go back generations. Just an FYI the biggest flag of puppy farmers are the breeding of cross breeds.

Genuinely didn't know this. Is it because you can't tell what a breed really is if it's a crossbreedb

Mainly because there is no KC registration etc so no expectations of paperwork hence you can cross anything with anything. The rise of 'designer' breeds eg cockapoo etc fuelled this. My trainer works with police and RSPCA on puppy farm prosecutions and 90% of cross breeds come from puppy farms.

Oh i feel for you! We lost our dog so unexpectedly i think i posted on your original thread too. We got another dog shortly after but were lucky enough that a private seller was selling a dog the very same breed and same age as the little one we lost. I don’t think we’d have gone for another breed as we have the perfect setup and had done all our research on the breed we had before. I’d be careful rushing in so quickly if your unsure of the breed or get up to speed on what would be involved getting them trained and exactly what they need from their new family. We love our little rescue the sadness of losing a pet doesn’t really go but i think having her has made it a bit easier.
