How much do old dogs sleep?

Bella is thirteen and seems to sleep an awful lot and wondering whether that's normal or not.
She happily walks for 45minutes to an hour each morning and 15 to 30 minutes each evening.
Outside of food times, greeting visitors, fussing over dc and a spot of watching the world go by from the windows and the odd garden visit to scare birds from the fence she sleeps.
Weather isn't good here today so she won't want to walk in rain so has slept all morning and will walk as soon as rain stops for example.

Sounds very normal to me and a nice life for an old girl.

Mine is 12 and sleeps all the time. He's like a cat. He goes to bed at around 8pm and wakes up at around 10am. We hear him pottering around a couple of times in the night. Then he pretty much sleeps on and off all day. He perks up at around 4.30pm when DS gets back from school and is awake until 8pm.
He's not unwell, he has medication for his thyroid and the vet isn't concerned. He's just completely bone idle. He's like a ninja if we open the fridge though!

Mine's 9. She's an early riser, and loves her morning walk, but once that's done and she's had her breakfast I barely see her all day apart from lunchtime when she emerges from her boudoir to politely ask for a bit of whatever I'm having. Then back to sleep until DH gets home about 6, an hour or two of excitement, dinner and playing because he's home, then back to sleep again! So all in all I'd say there's really only about 4-5ish hours a day where she's not happily napping in a mound of blankets!

Our dogs sleep a lot, they are 10 and 3. I believe on average an adult dog needs approx 12-14 hours sleep a day and for senior dogs and puppies can sleep between 18-20 hours.

steppemum · 29/03/2023 12:22

Mine is 3.
He gets 1.5 hours in the morning and 45 min - 1 hour in the evening, and he spends the rest of the day asleep!

Honestly apart from some time watching out of the window.
Our previous dog was a springer and was similar. 90% ofthe time he is at home he is asleep!

(well, aprt fomr when he is stealing easter eggs and having to have emergency vet visits)

mumto2teenagers · 29/03/2023 12:23

Also just to add happy dogs usually sleep a lot, if they are sleeping less than usual it can be a sign of stress, so I wouldn't worry.

hiredandsqueak · 29/03/2023 13:03

Glad it's all very normal, she is a happy dog I think I worry a lot over her as she's gotten to thirteen. We love her and losing her will break our hearts it's made me a little neurotic I think. Flowers

Yes my old lady is 13 and sleeps most of the day too! She has about an hours exercise on an afternoon but if the weather is bad or she looks especially tired I leave her on the sofa. I can't ever imagine a day where she won't be here 🥺

Our dog is 13 in June , he has been very unwell this year so walks have completely changed . He sleeps from 10 pm until about 9 am and during the day he only has little short cat naps as he follows me about constantly , goes for a 30-45 min walk ( just starting to go offlead again) , plays with his toys and chews a lot .

peppermintteagirl · 30/03/2023 04:26

My 12.5 year old is quite active still in the mornings, but then tends to nap all afternoon and evening. She has last toilet and snack at 8.30pm and then will sleep until I wake up in the morning, so usually 10-11hrs. She is never awake before me.

My 7 year old sleeps literally all day and night unless he's walking or eating.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 30/03/2023 07:21

Mine's only five and can happily sleep the day away Grin

Astrabees · 30/03/2023 14:33

Our rescue Staffie Cross is 13 too. She loves long walks, plays with her tennis balls and is sociable and friendly but most of the day she is asleep.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 30/03/2023 14:49

One of mine is almost 17 and he seems to sleep most of the time now.

He wakes up, has a little wander and then goes back to sleep 😴

Mumsafan · 30/03/2023 15:01

Ours is 13 this year, he sleeps a lot, especially in the winter. He is a summer dog, loves it in the sunshine and when the doors are open so he can just wander in and out as he pleases.

Yes I'm hoping when it warms up a bit Bella will be a bit more awake. She likes the warmth and the sun and the light nights so we are heading in the right direction anyway.

17 is an old boy, I really hope Bella makes it to seventeen.

Oh god mine is only 5 and I can't get him out of bed before 12pm! He's such a lazy boy. He sleeps after his walk/breakfast for a couple of hours before next walk and then another good sleep before evening walk and dinner. He goes into bed at about 9-10 pm.

TheTempest · 30/03/2023 16:11

My 17 year old sleeps I’d say 20 ish hours a day. She wakes up potters about and then back for a nap. All of mine sleep a lot to be fair, except the springer who’s 3 1/2 who sleeps for maybe 90 minutes in the morning and again in the afternoon, and sleeps all night but other than that is awake and trying to play with me/ the other dogs on an endless loop!

KStockHERO · 30/03/2023 16:14

My dog is 10.

She's up at about 7-7:30am and has a half hour walk. She gets a brain training puzzle game at about 8:30am, out to the garden for a wee. Then by 9am, her eyes are drooping and she's ready to head back to bed.

She'll then sleep from 9am until 5pm, flitting between the three beds she has in my home office. She might go for a wee at lunchtime but not usually.

We go for a 45 minute walk at about 5:30pm. Then she'll snooze until we cook at about 6:30pm. Then begins an hour or so of begging for food and playing more brain training games. At 8pm she's settled on the sofa and deep asleep. We wake her up at 10pm for a wee and to take her to bed. She'll then sleep straight through - unless its summer and she wakes for a drink around 2am - until 7am the next day. Rinse and repeat.

gogohmm · 30/03/2023 16:19

Ddog sleeps / snoozes around 20 hours a day and has done since around 8 years old. Was most annoyed at lockdown when all these noisy young people stopped going out daily and worst still, dragged him for endless walks (which he does enjoy, just not 6 times a day!) and then to cap it off, moved in their boyfriendsGrin
