Dog bed

We got DDog 2 and a half years ago as a puppy. She is a working black lab. She has been an utter dream and1000% times easier than DC!

We are struggling to find a dog bed that suits though. I would like something easily washable at home. We have tried 3 different types from local pet shops after we got rid of the crate. They have all ended up in the bin really smelly despite washing.

Any advice? Thanks.

My labs have always like to have beds that have sides so I have gone for a tuffies raised bed with washable covers.

Tuffies are expensive so you could also use a plastic oval bed with washable covers. Vet bed will last for ever and does not smell doggy when washed. I have had some for decades.

Raised dog bed

Cheaper option you can get even cheaper liners from other places

Complete fabric beds for my labs would be a waste of money as you say they are really hard to clean over time and the doggy smell just lingers of the stuffing goes lumpy

My collies love the Hi K9 beds which are fab so easy to clean just take off the topper put in the wash, hose down the bed if needed and come out good as new. However the labs choose the other beds over these

Our 23 month old lab has this one www.petslovescruffs.com/collections/dog-beds/products/highland-box-bed-blue as seems to like having something for his head.

He's got a few round the house and one that is a double washable duvet from ikea inside a cover made from heavy fleece fastened with Velcro

Our also 2 year old working black lab just uses a duvet in a cover, then the cover can be washed.

Mine two spaniels share an XL Tuffie nest, and I think they'd get a few other dogs in with them too. Never ever smells, and gets a good scrub in the summer. I do use the fleece liners though in winter and wash them about once a month.

Would highly recommend this from Pets at home. Waterproof, really hard wearing and the whole thing is washable - it goes in the washing machine in two parts.

Also have a 2 year old working line black Lab - we have the Tuffies Easy Access nest bed - brilliant quality, easy to spot wash and remove liner to wash. We got ours on recommendation of my brother whose Goldie had one for over ten years. They do sometimes have a reduced section if you keep an eye out!

KILM · 25/03/2023 21:24

You could also do a plastic bed with fleecy blankets in, then the blankets can just go in the wash - not for every dog though!

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 25/03/2023 21:28

Just a thought - if you can put your dog onto raw food, they loose a lot of the ‘doggy’ smell……….

I’ve used a variety of beds for my spaniel. Her absolute favourite by a mile is a fluffy doughnut type which I probs wash in the machine on a wools wash every couple of weeks or when it begins to emit a slight odour. Comes out of the machine fresh and dried quickly. Pop a folded dog blanket in it to extend the time between washes. I swear there’s something about the bed which she finds hypnotic!

Another vote for Tuffies. You can wash down and disinfect the mattress when you wash the cover. The last very well - the one we have in use is 7-ish years old and the mattress is in amazing shape. You can get new covers or make your own.
