What do we need for a new puppy

drivinmecrazy · 24/03/2023 00:25

It seems that we might have a puppy coming to live with us on Saturday.
Frightening doesn't even cover it!
We've known pups in the family and have had an older dog.
But I'm at a loss and am panicked.
What do we need and what to expect??
Total novice here.

Playpen or baby gates to keep pup out of danger areas.
We had a collapsible crate with blankets over for timeout.
If biggish then a sling so you can take them out and about for socialisation.

Groutyonehereagain · 24/03/2023 00:32

A crate and comfortable bedding, food and water bowls, puppy food, collar and lead, dog tag, something for them to travel in when in the car, we have a canvass kennel, toys, brush, a spray cleaner for mopping up accidents. I think that’s it for starters. Good luck. 🐾

Patience……lots and lots of patience 😂

Floofydawg · 24/03/2023 08:42

All of the above plus many many chew toys.

Newpeep · 24/03/2023 09:33

Patience. Time and a way to manage pup and keep them away from your other dog for considerable time because puppies are gits.

Climbles · 24/03/2023 09:34

Really tough dog chews/toys to re-direct their biting. Read up about the puppy blues.

wetotter · 24/03/2023 09:36
Gin

Plus enzyme urine cleaner, and lots of kitchen roll (or endless supply of washable rags)

Spanielsarepainless · 24/03/2023 11:00

Time to sit down and read the other gazillion threads on MN about new puppies.

Going through all kinds of thought processes now!!
Doubt, excitement, doubt !!
Everyone else seems so excited yet I'm trying to be the voice of reason and sanity.
Will the rest of my family really be a committed as they say? Or will it all be down to me the moment it gets hard.
TBH it's what we have been endlessly talking about for years but now it's time frankly I'm bricking it!

In my experience the family soon get tired of all the help they offer, that’s okay with me because I wanted the puppy. They are all teenagers so it’s easy for me to get them to do some puppy care. Tbh it was the first few weeks where you had to watch every move in case of a pee puddle that was the hardest. She’s 19 weeks old now and mostly house trained.

Sunflowers765 · 24/03/2023 12:12

Be prepared for puppy blues. But they will pass! Get Steve Manns Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy book and read it cover to cover about 5 times!! Do what it says!!! Also you'll be sitting with puppy for hours and hours so it'll give you something to do! Get a crate for naps and night time. Good luck. It's awful and wonderful all at the same time. Don't get discouraged when it's awful.. all the puppy things will pass... And having a dog is the absolute best thing ever!!

Meceme · 24/03/2023 12:46

Gin

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 24/03/2023 12:47

A camera.. Most important!

drivinmecrazy · 24/03/2023 12:56

Reading these replies fills me with excitement and dread in equal measure!!!
Atleast we've agreed on a name so that's a start.
He will be called wellington and he's a Weimaraner.
Not everyone's cup of tea but my parents had one and we all think they are the most amazing dogs.
Will post pictures of all goes to plan tomorrow. We'll have a long drive home so that's a challenge in itself

I'm sorry, another question.
What should we expect of the pup when he first comes home.
He'll obviously be very wary and no doubt shell shocked.
Should we leave him in his safe space for however long he needs?

I have a puppy arriving soon and I have

Bed
Crate
Blankets
Puppy Pads
Collar, Lead, Harness and Tag
Toys
Sling
Car Seat (totally not essential but very handy)
Bowls
Teddy with a Heartbeat Simulator (used one with both my previous puppy and it did seem to help them settle at night)

When they come home, I will pop them in a bed and just see what they want.

Our pup needed near constant physical contact with us for the first few weeks. She’d only sleep on our laps or under our chin. At 7 months she’s now a confident independent madam but still needs the odd reassurance.

New pup is here and causing havoc!
He seems quite settled already though I'm sure the worst is yet to come

😂 that worked !
First night was good, if you are DH and DDs. None of them even stirred.
I however spent between midnight and six o'clock keeping the baby company.
Spent today 'training' him to sleep in his bed alone but think I did such a good job that he slept too soundly between seven and nine alone.
Though it was a blessed relief I'm paying for it now because he's whimpering.
Having said that the cries are getting less so now I have to plan a stealthy exit. Have left the shipping forecast app playing and one small under light on. Fingers crossed might make it to one o'clock!
