Joint stiffness supplement for older dog.

Can anyone recommend a supplement for older dogs to help with joint stiffness. Cockapoo is 12 years old and seems to struggle with stiffness in her back leg. Still running around and agile but then seems stiff particularly on evening walk.
I'm preferably looking for something that can be sprinkled on food, she is really really bad at taking tablets !

Salmon oil... we used this one for our cockapoo and she never suffered with stiff joints. Just squirt on food, job done!

Activated turmeric (with black pepper) is good for stiff joints due to its anti-inflammatory effects. My springerpoo is 9 and gets a bit stiff in her hips so give her a turmeric capsule with her dinner (I get them from Amazon). She's usually a nightmare with tablets and picks them out but these ones she takes no problem. On Amazon there are also capsules you can break apart and sprinkle the powder over food but as turmeric is quite strong tasting/smelling you'll need something quite smelly such as sardines or mackerel to disguise.

Riaflex or ProDogRaw Flex are both very effective and in powder form

Wolfiefan · 18/03/2023 22:12

I use Riaflex and it’s brilliant.

Floralnomad · 18/03/2023 23:33

Canine joint right , it’s a powder

'Joint Aid for Dogs', it comes in the form of tiny pellets you just sprinkle on the dogs food. It worked absolute wonders for my dog, so much so, I didn't have to go down the route of expensive monthly injections at the vets for her.

My dog used to eat the soft YuMove joint treats, but since they changed the shape and contents she won’t touch them. And I don’t want to force a tablet down every day.
So now I use the salmon oil - but she’s not that keen on it - or just put a drop of olive oil on her food.

MadamNoo · 19/03/2023 07:29

I wrap the Yumove tablets in butter for mine, have you tried that? She also has something from the vet called Loxicom(?) Which is drops to put on food.

mamnotmum · 19/03/2023 07:50

Also recommend yumove. Our cockapoo had bad leg and helped v quickly.

Isabelle70 · 19/03/2023 08:05

My 13 and 9 year old both take the Yumove tablets like they would a treat.
I get it from Amazon as they won't post to me but their website has a £10 month trial.

Riaflex is the best joint supplement in terms of % active ingredients. I'd also recommend Eden dog food join support supplement but my view is that probably provides support over the lifetime rather than once the dog is older.

I would avoid salmon oil as it goes rancid incredibly quickly - often when it arrives it is on the turn so you never notice.

I would highly recommend heat pads, using a hairdryer to ensure they are dried off if washed/out in the rain.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 19/03/2023 08:07

Riaflex is good.

Joints from Vince the Vet has been way better than YuMove or heavy duty painkillers for my arthritic 13 year old. It's a fine powder.

Babyroobs · 19/03/2023 16:22

Thanks so much for all the suggestions everyone. It's good to know what things have worked. Going to try to get something ordered today for her.

Joint supplements won't help the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Ideally you would start supplements when they're younger. Please see your vet for pain relief.

This one from Riaflex:

Germam vet recommended glug of rapeseed oil on food when we got our ridgeback to help with coat and joints. He's now 10 and still very mobile, up/down stairs, couch bed etc.

Natural VetCare Veterinary Strength Joint Relief Comfort Dog Supplement, 250 ml amzn.eu/d/bIoO6FD

This is what I give my elderly dog, he likes it and I've seen a marked improvement in his movement - he's definitely more supple

Justleaveitblankthen · 19/03/2023 18:04

I give my dogs this and they love it (build it up slowly over a few weeks & no more than a pump each)
Has lasted me for months now.

Zipvit Salmon Oil for Dogs 1 Litre, 100% Pure Scottish Salmon Oil. Natural Omega 3, 6 & 9 Supplement for Dogs and Cats. Supports Healthy Coat and Skin and Maintains Joint and Brain Health. amzn.eu/d/8Xt10M4

It also helps disguise the taste of the Brewers yeast powder I also give 😎
