DDog Mounted by male dog

Ddog (female) is 8 months old. Not yet neutered as vet wants to wait for her to be fully grown. Not had any reason to think she's in season but then we are not experienced dog owners.

DH and DS took her to the park and DH let her play with a male dog (despite me telling him before that he needs to be more careful around other dogs). All was fine for about 5 mins until the male dog got on her back. DH said he was right next to her so pulled the dog straight off.

He didn't think to ask the owner if the dog was neutered or not and now he's worried sick that she must be in season and the dog was trying to mate with her.

What can we do? Is there a doggy morning after pill?

Will call vets when they're open tomorrow but would be good to get some advice from experienced owners

Strict words have been had with DH about her interactions with other dogs

Yes you can get a doggy morning after pill - I’d speak to the vets in the morning as soon as you can. I don’t know whether the dog would have mounted her if she isn’t in season, but I’m sure they would be able to advise.

pumpkinpink · 26/02/2023 17:10

Don't dogs have to 'tie' to get pregnant? It think it takes more than a quick mount, that sounds more like playing or just trying his luck.

PurpleSprouty · 26/02/2023 17:16

Oh I really hope so @pumpkinpink

I just wish DH had spoken. to the owner about it. It could be the dog was neutered and just playing and we're worrying about nothing.

I think if he pulled him off, they weren't tied. Dogs do play like that. Mating is a bit different, they wouldn't let you pull them apart.

Wolfiefan · 26/02/2023 17:20

If she was in season then her bits would be swollen and you would likely have noticed blood drips around the house.
Humping is often not a sexual behaviour.

Ostryga · 26/02/2023 17:22

If they didn’t tie you should be ok. But definitely call the vets in the morning, accidental pregnancy at 8 months is very dangerous.

PLEASE only walk bitches in heat either very, very early or late at night and always on a lead. It is basic dog ownership.

Read up on signs of heat so you know for certain what to look for. And drill this into silly dh!

Scramble1805 · 26/02/2023 17:23

To put it bluntly, takes a lot longer than that to finish the job with dogs.
If you can separate them then it wasn't mating.

Suzi888 · 26/02/2023 17:25

Agree with pp. I think you’ll be ok, but see the vet.

Blueberrywitch · 26/02/2023 17:27

I think it’s extremely unlikely they had sex or she’s pregnant! Google dogs mating, they “tie” which involves them facing backwards to each other and being locked in. Very obvious and takes more than a quick hump. (I had no idea about this until after getting a dog)

PurpleSprouty · 26/02/2023 18:05

Thank you all. Sounds like it's unlikely then. She was on a lead and no signs of heat or he would have kept her well away. Hopefully DH is over reacting in thinking they were mating. From what he said it was immediately that he pulled the other dog off so doesn't sound like it was enough time.

I'll call the vets in the morning to get their opinion.

@PurpleSprouty her vulva would be offensively swollen if she was in heat. You'd know 100%

Wolfiefan · 26/02/2023 18:31

Yep. Think baboon. 🤣

PurpleSprouty · 26/02/2023 18:33

Ah ok thank you. It looks like it always does but as we are knew to dogs I was wondering if the changes were subtle and we might not have noticed. Apparently not 🤣

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 26/02/2023 18:45

Definitely NOT subtle in our experience!

Ostryga · 26/02/2023 19:04

Oh god no not subtle. My dog used to clam to me for a week beforehand and then the swelling.

You’ll know!

tabulahrasa · 26/02/2023 20:11

Occasionally bitches can go into season without obvious signs, and they can sometimes get pregnant without tying... but both of those together would be pretty rare and your husband would absolutely know if they’d mated, I mean - there’s penetration and thrusting and it’s not straightforward to get them apart even with a slip mating.

My dog will still occasionally try to hump other dogs (obviously I stop him), it’s over excitement, he’ll do it with either sex, it’s literally just ooh I don’t know what to do with myself, so I’ll hump. Neutered dogs will still do it, some bitches do it.

MabelMoo23 · 26/02/2023 22:29

We have a small dog (miniature dachshund) and she’s only just going through her first season at 13 months.

I was worried that I’d missed it because I’d never had a young female dog.

nope, believe me when I say you cannot miss it!!!!!! I promise you’ll know when it happens
