High value treats

What do you use as a high value treat when training?

OP posts:

We used sardines and cubes of cheese. Our dog is not massively food-motivated but he was willing to follow instructions for those!

WetBandits · 20/02/2023 08:16

Hotdogs, cubed cheese and the ultimate Uno reverse card...Dreamies.

Dreamies work because he knows he’s absolutely not allowed them usually 😂

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 20/02/2023 08:48

stuff that smells - dried sprats seem to be the thing at the moment

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 20/02/2023 09:11

Tesco cocktail sausages or cubes or cheese.

CupidCantAimStraight · 20/02/2023 09:19

Tubidog liver pate - which comes in a convenient toothpaste style tube - is fantastic

Lorrymum · 20/02/2023 09:28

I have a little mini schnauzer and worry about possible pancreatitis from hotdogs and cheese. Such a shame because I know she would love them. I use Bounce and Bella fish flavoured treats, small and easy to carry.

OnaBegonia · 20/02/2023 09:49

I make liver treats, very easy and they can be frozen.

HappiestSleeping · 20/02/2023 10:10

I have a Labrador so fortunately anything that is edible works.

currantbee · 20/02/2023 10:14

It depends on the situation, outside the house a ball or toy works better than any treat for us.

FastFood · 20/02/2023 12:02

Same as another poster, I make liver treats. Nothing beats that for my pup. I also use cooked chicken, but he still prefers the liver treats.

henchhen · 20/02/2023 12:27

Cooked Chicken

EdithStourton · 20/02/2023 12:29

Primula. The product recognition is instant when you get it out. You can give them a tiny bit, or a larger dollop, to kick off the end of the tube.

AbbieLexie · 20/02/2023 12:31

Advised by dog behaviouralist we were working with - pork roasted which we cubed and froze meaning we can take a few out when needed. Vet thought the dog was fed better than he was.

LBF2020 · 20/02/2023 13:37

@waterlego how does it work with the sardines - Are they dried?
I'm imagining tinned sardines loose in my pocket 🤣

waterlego · 21/02/2023 10:11

@LBF2020 Not dried no- tinned sardines dispensed into a little bag in the pocket. Quite messy and stinky 😩😂

I have a pug, it doesn't even have to be edible 😂

mumto2teenagers · 21/02/2023 13:05

We use cooked chicken and cheese.

LBF2020 · 21/02/2023 13:49

@waterlego no way! I need to up my treat game

Spanielsarepainless · 21/02/2023 20:52

Homemade liver cake
Mature Cheddar
Dried sprats
Cat food pouches for jackpots

Spanielsarepainless · 21/02/2023 20:53

And tubes of Primula!

ilovesushi · 21/02/2023 21:28

hot dogs, cheese, liver in a tube.

ilovesushi · 21/02/2023 21:31

How are you making liver treats @Spanielsarepainless @FastFood @OnaBegonia ?

OllytheCollie · 21/02/2023 21:41

Buy liver in supermarket, pig liver is cheapest, pop out flat on a baking dish (on foil as it is messy), pop in oven for 45-60 mins on low-med whilst you are cooking something else like a sun roast. Once all dried up and manky leave to cool then delegate the task of snipping into tiny chunks (1/2cm cubes are right) to a hungry teen in exchange for extra roast potatoes. Massive tub can go in freezer, just decant what you need for a few days at a time. Costs about £1.50 and yields about 400g of treats. Use mixed up with other things as dogs shd not have too much liver at once. I used to do clever stuff with sardines too but found life was too short.

WineThief · 21/02/2023 21:44

Liver here too. Definitely his most high value treat and is what got his recall top notch in a couple of weeks.

Works with any type of liver available at the supermarket, just boiled for 10 mins, portioned and frozen.

Molecule · 21/02/2023 21:49

@ilovesushi this is how I make liver cake; I whiz up a packet of liver, about 500g with 5 or 6 eggs and any crappy bits of cheese, ham, yogurt etc from the fridge, then add around 500g self-raising flour. Whiz again and pour onto a lined baking tray. Bake at 180 deg C for 45 minutes. Once cooled I cut into cubes and freeze most of it, just keeping a small amount in the fridge. All dogs love it, and it easily breaks up into tiny bits.

As it’s for dogs you can vary the quantities of the ingredients and it doesn’t matter if you over bake it, they really aren’t fussy.}
