What do you use as a high value treat when training?

@OllytheCollie @WineThief thanks both! I'm going to give it a go.

ilovesushi · 21/02/2023 21:51

@Molecule wow! That sounds so gourmet! I think my dog's recall will be 100% solid with that as a treat!

SkiingIsHeaven · 21/02/2023 21:57

Herta sausages

How are you making liver treats @Spanielsarepainless @FastFood @OnaBegonia ?

1 lb ox/pig/chicken liver
1 lb plain flour
2 eggs
Tablespoonful of olive oil

Whizz in food processor until fairly smooth.
Put in shallow microwaveable fish and zap on high for 12 minutes. It puffs up but goes down again.

When it's cool I sliced it into thin slices, about half an inch at the thick end, and froze most of it and I defrost a slice at a time for the day. It's lasted almost a month with high intensity Labrador training, bulked out with cubes of cheese.

Spanielsarepainless · 22/02/2023 07:01

Dish, not fish!

ilovesushi · 22/02/2023 07:39

@Spanielsarepainless thanks spaniels! Sounds good.

My liver treats:
A pack of chicken livers
4 eggs
2 table spoons of flour
2 table spoons of peanut butter
All mixed together, then baked in the oven for like 35 mins, cut in pieces once cooled down and voilà !
Can be frozen of course, my dog is tiny so a pack of liver lasts forever.

A word of caution: a lot of dogs love you at the park after that. Don't recommend if you have fancy clothes that can't stand muddy paws.

Newpeep · 22/02/2023 09:24

It's different for different dogs.

Working terrier - I use chicken liver cooked or chicken as the highest value. Webbox beef sticks are good too if I run out on a walk. Tiny bits.

I used to make liver cake but I found just air frying the liver easier and value was much higher.

Great recipe, I will try this one.

My 1 yo pup is not food driven at all unless its food that belongs to us but if he wants to do something else then I just can't distract him with anything. I will give this a go.

tiredwardsister · 23/02/2023 08:57

Baked liver every time it’s transformed my younger dogs recall. I agree with a previous poster every dog will love you my friends dogs also think I’m the best thing since …… sliced liver as well one who’s not particularly sociable with anyone but his family sits on my lap when ever I go round! A friend who lives in London found the same thing and got every labrador in the park around her!

Ostryga · 23/02/2023 09:03

Yes be prepared to be every dog recalling to you with liver cake 🤣

My old spaniel used to go absolutely crackers for it and would even walk perfectly to heel on the lead (as most spaniel owners know they are knobs on lead usually) when I had some.

Bieder · 23/02/2023 15:26

Sardines, sprats, air-dried liver

I have a Labrador so fortunately anything that is edible works.

I got mugged by a DF's Labrador recently for treads Grin

Sunflowers765 · 23/02/2023 22:41

@HappiestSleeping
I have a lab also. He'll do pretty much anything for one piece of kibble. But he gets liver for recall. Crikey he runs fast when I whistle!

Sunflowers765 · 23/02/2023 22:43

@Molecule
I'm definitely going to try making your liver cake

Straight out of the tube. They lick it off.

HarryBlackberry1 · 26/02/2023 08:11

Cubed cheese.

Do you blitz it in the blender?

CandlelightGlow · 03/03/2023 15:00

Are there any concerns with feeding dogs liver daily due to Vitamin A? My mum has a young spaniel who still needs a lot of work on recall and I want to suggest it to her but want to check!

Ostryga · 03/03/2023 17:17

She would have to feed a huge amount of liver per day for it to become dangerous. I’m talking 1kg upwards. For training you just need small pieces, probably use less than 25g over a day.

Vitamin a is an essential vitamin for dogs, it’s not comparable to say unborn babies that it is dangerous to!
