Where are all the Staffs?

I regularly peruse P4H, not because I would buy a dog from there, but I just like looking at pictures of puppies and seeing what’s available and popular locally (yes I need to get out more probably!).

I’ve noticed that all of a sudden there are almost no adverts for SBTs and loads for American Bullies? And the staffies that are available are now the very squat, muscular type, not the longer/leaner more athletic sort. And they are all blue! It’s bizarre! What happened to the classic brindle colouring?

Is it just me or are they disappearing?

Well, it isn’t a mystery at all is it? It’s what sells.
Staffies were the ‘go to’ Twats dog, now it’s XL Bulldogs.
And yes, Blue is a ‘go to’ Twats colour.
And no, I won’t be apologising for that characterisation.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/02/2023 18:36

And as an appendix, no one who cares about dogs buys from P4H.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 12/02/2023 18:40

@Judashascomeintosomemoney basically everything you said ...

TheSpottedZebra · 12/02/2023 18:40

They're all in rescue centres.
Their fuckwit owners have swapped them for the new thing.

CupidCantAimStraight · 12/02/2023 18:53

They're no longer fashionable; for a long time they were the dog of choice for the moron wanting to look tough. Blue was a "rare" aka expensive colour, so that was the status symbol added extra.

Now the same morons want American Bulldogs and XL Bullies.

I did state in my OP that I have no intention of buying a dog from there.

It’s a shame as I think a staffy would suit our family/lifestyle but due to having other pets and children I wouldn’t feel comfortable with a rescue. But it sounds like a puppy might actually be hard to find when the time comes!

Why wouldn’t you feel comfortable with a rescue? There are plenty of professional, trustworthy rescues available. Lots of them will have Staffies available.

And the trustworthy, professional, rescues will asses you and your home set up and place an appropriate dog in an appropriate way.
If a professional, trustworthy rescue can’t place a Staffy with you it’s because either the dog, or your family set up, isn’t appropriate or safe. Buying a puppy in these circumstances isn’t the answer. In fact, a good Staffy breeder would have the same criteria for appropriateness and safety as a good rescue.

Finding a decent breeder wouldn’t be any harder, might even be easier, a lot of the shitty ones have weeded themselves out into other breeds so you don’t have to Wade through those as well.

Suzi888 · 12/02/2023 19:29

I don’t care if this is in AIBU YABU! There are loads of rescue Staffies available OP.

Moomoo2o22 · 12/02/2023 19:30

Wow you don't stereotype much on here do you! I happen to have a Staffy she's the loveliest dog brilliant with our children. She loves nothing more than a cuddle on the sofa with us! She loves a long walk while I drink my special brew and DH smokes his spliff if it's warm he will wear his string vest to show off his prison tats and I'll roll up my kappa bottoms no one gives us any trouble because we look so hard with our staff 🤷

Eh? What are you on about? Who’s stereotyped?
Yes Staffordshire Bull Terriers are fabulous dogs. What’s that got to do with any of the answers so far?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/02/2023 20:25

And no, no one said everyone who has a Staff is a certain type of Twat either. Jesus, reading and comprehension,
people. Reading and comprehension.

Mavericksaviators · 13/02/2023 00:01

This is my pug X staff

TimeToFlyNow · 13/02/2023 00:50

I haven't seen one for ages now you've mentioned it. They were certainly the dog to have round here years ago.

Soxford1 · 13/02/2023 05:17

My first 2 SBT were rescues, but when I lost my oldest I struggled to find a rescue that wasn't crossed with something else , and as I wanted a pure bred, I went down the puppy route for the first time.
You are absolutely correct that blue is taking over the breed. About 75% of KC registered litters are blue . Many of these litters are bred for colour and so they are often not good examples of the breed. Not many blues are seen in the show ring for this reason.

Another thing is that skin problems and allergies are common in dogs bred from parents that are both blue.
I strongly recommend contacting your local breed club if you are looking for a reputable breeder. There is a group on FB called Staffordshire bull terrier debates and topics, and they will point you in the right direction.
My pup is now 2, and is everything the breed should be. I compete in dog agility and all 3 of my dogs have been great representatives of the breed which is why I wanted a good example of a SBT. It's great to get out there and show people what they can do.
It would be a shame if blue were to take over the breed. Especially with the health problems. My rescues were black/brindle and the second is white. Youngest boy is red.

Where are all the Staffs?
USaYwHatNow · 13/02/2023 05:35

We have an extremely soppy, brindle and white female staffy. We got her as a pup in 2019 before the world went tits up! We managed to socialise her with lots of different dogs before anyone knew what Covid was, and especially socialised her with lots of other Staffy's in our local area (semi-rural Hampshire). They were all either brindle, all white and the odd red.

Recently, I've seen one tiny blue Staffy pup. All the others have been brindle and the like, and even they are older dogs. The dog of the moment round here seems to be GSDs!

3ormoredogs · 13/02/2023 06:26

Replaced by bullies.

Where I work pretty much everything coming in is a cockerpoo/poodle cross or a bully/AMbull.

Hundreds of breeds but in this area it seems everyone must have what everyone else has 😄

He's beautiful!

We have a 7 year old shih tzu, not long after we got him there was an increase in them crossed with Chihuahuas. Also pugs that sound like they can't breath

Now it's all French bulldogs

Whichwhatnow · 13/02/2023 12:34

They've all moved to Bristol. Plenty of them here. Gorgeous dogs and I miss my staffie girl every day.

I would agree that bullies are becoming more of the dog of choice for a certain kind of person though.

Soxford1 · 13/02/2023 12:35

Thank you TimeToFlyNow... He's everything I was hoping for

Chesneyhawkes1 · 13/02/2023 15:37

@Moomoo2o22 I also have a staffy. Rescue one. Doesn't change the fact a lot of the people that choose to own them are morons.

That's why the breed ended up getting such a bad reputation. Twats owned them. However they seemed to have moved onto XL bullies now.

No one is blaming the lovely staffies for this.
