Worming tablet making our pup sick?!

We have an 8 month Shih Tzu/Poodle cross rescue puppy. We picked him up from the rescue when he was 5 months, and he had already been wormed/de flead. So we signed up for Pets at Home monthly subscription, and gave him his first Drontal 'tasty bone' at 6 months. That evening he was sick twice, but we assumed he had just eaten something he shouldn't have out on a walk (he goes out with a dog walker during the week).

The next month he was also sick the same day he had the tablet but we'd been to the beach and we thought he'd maybe swallowed a bit of sea water. He didnt bring up loads, and I couldn't see the tablet in what he'd brought up, so I assumed he digested it and thought nothing of it.

However yesterday we gave him his tablet, and it was the first time he's weighed enough to have a whole one. I know he's not eaten anything he shouldn't have, and he's been absolutely fine otherwise but was sick last night again, and brought up quite a lot. It was just the one time, and he's absolutely right as rain, but it must be the tablet, right? It's too much of a coincidence.

Anyone else had problems with this particular wormer?

Drontal made our dog sick too, ask the vet and they can try an alternative worming/flea program.

Try a spot-on treatment instead.

We had this, let the vet know and they offered a different brand to try and that one was fine.

Drontal made my spaniel horribly sick too. He has Milbemax instead and is okay with that but seems to have a problem with Nexgard as well now!

My dog also couldn't tolerate Drontal. Made him very sick. Vet switched to Panacur granules (mixed with food and he's fine with those). He has Advocate spot-on for flea treatment every month, which apparently also treats worm eggs, so the Panacur worming is only needed once every 6 months.

You could worm count - so medication only taken if needed.

Some dogs can’t tolerate certain drugs due to genetic mutations.

My shihtzu is sick after a certain tablet and really really sick, we vet ours from vet so they switched to a different one.

One of our dogs ended up on a drip from a worming tablet. Like you I had rationalised previous sickness. Get your vet to prescribe something else.

My golden retriever pup was really sick for two days from a drontal tablet.

Drontal used to make my terrier sick too. I trust the brand so all we did was keep it well away from dinner time. A 3-4 hour gap either side of his meal did the trick.

I've had the exact same thing with both my dogs, they just don’t seem to be able to tolerate drontal
