New sofas

We've recently replaced our seventeen year old leather sofas which were absolutely past it.

We've gone for material replacements as in the intervening years we've gone vegan.

With three dogs the material sofas scare the hell out of me but I hate the look of them completely covered over with throws - just looks a bit student-bedsit to me - maybe it's the way I've done it, maybe it's the throws -

  • what do you do with your sofas to make them look nice and keep them clean??

Sorry OP, place marking as I need new sofas too.

Bodybags · 05/02/2023 14:21

Washable covers.
ikea do them.

Bodybags · 05/02/2023 14:23

Shein do loads of different designs, sizes, shapes. We have to see on our caravan seats. Cheap as chips, easy and washable.

Noeggsontoast · 05/02/2023 14:24

Cream fabric sofa, two dogs, 3sets of covers - it's an IKEA sofa.

IWonderWhyIBother · 05/02/2023 14:47

Personally, (not much help unfortunately) I don’t let them on the furniture.

doubleshotcappuccino · 05/02/2023 14:48

We put the back cushions down so they can't sit on them ... and have kept one of the old sofas for them to sit on the cushions of in the corner

Floralnomad · 05/02/2023 14:49

Throws , but they are tucked in and look tidy not just ‘thrown’ so we have very large ones .

userxx · 05/02/2023 15:00

Throws all the way! I bought mine from wilko's when they were on offer. We lost our boy very recently so I'm thinking of getting them reupholstered now, I fancy a change.

wheresmymojo · 05/02/2023 18:25

Sorry but I think throws are the only way to go.

We have a throw on 'our' sofa but it's tucked in and the colour matches the sofa itself so it isn't as obvious.

On the 'spare' sofa I actually use a double bed mattress protector which I've dyed to match the sofa. I've added 2 inch wide elastic at the top and bottom which goes over/under the cushions to stop it falling down every time the dog jumps on.

We remove all of this when we have visitors...

Hoppinggreen · 05/02/2023 18:26

We don’t allow our dog on the sofa but I know it’s not everyone’s choice

It would be my choice too but the dog disagreed 🤷‍♂️

wheresmymojo · 05/02/2023 18:29

The 'throw' on our sofa is also very large so that we can tuck it in on our 3 seater sofa. I couldn't find throws big enough, and they always looked too much like throws(!) so I actually bought a large cotton bedspread from John Lewis...

It's not sold anymore but this kind of thing...

We got a new expensive teal velvet sofa just before we got our puppy. Terrible timing. It is permanently covered with throws. Both cats and dog love to sleep on it.

zizza · 05/02/2023 19:30

Don't let them on the sofa. Ours are only allowed up if throws are on the seats. They're pretty good at realising that's the case 😊

tangerinetreesandmarmaladeskies · 06/02/2023 07:56

Ours is a fabric sofa - we picked a dark colour and it gets cleaned regularly. We do use throws too but the dog is allowed on the sofa whether the throw is there or not.

However he's not allowed in the house if he's muddy or wet without his drying coat on him and we always wipe his paws.

Tootyfilou · 09/02/2023 19:41

I have just bought a Loaf clever velvet sofa… previously had leather and I have been very nervous 😬
I have got some sofa toppers from Lords and Labradors… they are gorgeous, washable enhances the look Nd the velvet is easily wiped.
So far so good 😊

ilovesushi · 09/02/2023 20:26

@Tootyfilou ooo I'll take a look at those covers. We have a loaf sofa too.

JennyTheDonkey · 09/02/2023 20:34

Get a throw that matches the sofa, I have a grey woollen sofa and a couple of ikea grey fleece throws that get washed regularly. Life's too short to not cuddle up with my hound on the sofa.

Can't imagine if you've gone vegan that you'd be happy with buying from Shein from an ethical pov Confused

PenguinLove1 · 09/02/2023 20:42

The boucle weave fabric range from next is very hard wearing, my dog likes to dig my sofa and it doesn't catch or pull at all, and it cleans very easily. I used a throw when she was a puppy, but i think its a shame to cover your sofa completely in throws every day - whats the point if noone ever sees it?

Tootyfilou · 09/02/2023 21:29

@ilovesushi I would wholeheartedly recommend. They are expensive but I didn’t want my gorgeous sofa covered with throws.. sort of defeats the object.
They are lovely to sit on. Also they are reversible.

Cupcakequeen75 · 09/02/2023 21:39

Luckily we have two living rooms so the dog is allowed on the sofa in room-one (covered in throws of course) but in room-two they can only sit in the window chair to look out (covered in throws again) or on our laps on the large "posh" sofa (no throws).
As it is we spend 95% of our time in room-one so the "posh" sofa doesn't get much use anyway.

Just luuvvv a soft throw, so cosy!!!!!

Sunflowers765 · 09/02/2023 23:23

We have leather with throws and yes it does look a bit student bed sit but you can't beat a Labrador cuddle of an evening so we don't mind!
