Slow feeder bowls?

TheUsualChaos · 29/01/2023 19:18

I want to slow Ddog down at mealtimes.
Can anyone recommend a slow feeding bowl please? There seem to be so many out there! Don't want her to get frustrated with it but want to slow her down to maybe about 10mins instead of 45seconds.
DDog is raw fed and has about 450-500g twice a day.

I have one like this

You're not likely to find a bowl that will make a meal last 10 minutes instead of 45 seconds.

QuestionableMouse · 29/01/2023 19:58

Mine just gets annoyed with them, picks it up and tips it out. Terrier brains are amazing 😂

Try stuffing the food into a Kong?

My Border Terrier used to do exactly this, may as well scatter any kibble over the kitchen floor, I guess it slowed her down of sorts.

RandomMess · 29/01/2023 20:18

It's metal and shaped so she hasn't tried to tip it up yet. Ok to clean

NoSquirrels · 29/01/2023 20:22

We have this green monstrosity.

Without it, lab cross inhales food within approximately 60 seconds.

With it, about 3-4 minutes?

TheUsualChaos · 29/01/2023 20:24

Ok maybe 10 mins was optimistic 😂

We have a Kong but more for treats/play rather than main food. She has raw food so want to keep it contain in one feeding bowl ideally.

Throw the kibble out in the garden across a wide area, he'll be out there for ages. Ours used to love it

Slow feeders can help but you could try a snuffle mat, or roll the kibble up in a large towel and tie in a loose knot, or put it in a cardboard box full of toys so they have to root it out?

closingscore · 29/01/2023 20:39

Oh sorry missed update about raw food....

Noeggsontoast · 03/02/2023 08:10

Raw feeder here but with greedy dog and no slow feeding bowl has ever slowed her down - we tried lots. The result is that we now hand feed, it's the only thing that has worked.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 03/02/2023 08:22

Have you got outside space, ideally grass? Can you scatter feed? I do this with my raw feeder sometimes - any missed bits & bacteria get snaffled up and processed by wildlife & bacteria.

TheUsualChaos · 03/02/2023 11:52

Yes we have a big garden, I have thought about trying scatter feeding, although maybe not in summer months as DC are running in and out barefoot all hours of the day! Although we could use lower end of garden as it's more of a wild area.

We've been doing some hand feeding. She always looks so grumpy about it, it's quite amusing 😆

We’ve found this one slows her down the most. She’s fed raw, but the food by itself still goes relatively quickly (much slower than a regular bowl though). I make sure I put lots of little bits in as many parts of the bowl as possible to slow her down. The narrower parts are good at making things like cooked peas or blueberries difficult to get out, so a few of those scattered in can keep her busy for quite a while!

We bought a couple of the nina ottosson puzzle food feeders, but she just destroyed them to get to the food, so if your dog is a destroyer of toys don’t waste your time on those!

Thanks both, look worth a try!
