Older dog weeing in bed

Have realised my almost 12 year old cocker is weeing a bit in her bed at night. Her bed isn’t soaked but there’s a definite pee smell if I sniff it. It’s not every night and it doesn’t seem to matter how late she goes out last thing, or how early I let her out so I’m guessing she’s a bit incontinent now.

She seems perfectly well in herself, is this just an older dog thing? I’ve never had an older fog before. Or does she need a vet trip?

Am checking and washing bed every morning it needs it which is a bit of a faff but I don’t want to change her to a hard bed as think she needs the comfort at her age!

See a vet. Older, spayed females can often develop involuntary uriniary incontinence which is easily controlled via a relatively cheap medication routine.

Hopefully the vet can help but you could get some washable mattress protectors - a double bed sized one cut in 4 and tucked around her bedding might work.

I’d get her checked for a urine infection, and ask about medication.

@honeyandbutterontoast
Has she been spayed??

Spanielsarepainless · 25/01/2023 11:41

You can get medication from the vet which might help. Oddly it doesn't work for dogs, only bitches.

Yes, she might need a kind of doggy HRT. works really well when you get the dosage right.

There is a herbal product called "Leaks No More" it is absolutely brilliant - has worked for all my elderly dogs - male & female 🙂

My old dog did this but medication from the vet sorted it easily. She was really embarrassed when she could see it happening poor old girl.

She was spayed years ago as a puppy. She doesn’t seem bothered about it at all and no signs of an infection (she’s had two bouts of bladder stones before so I’m always on the lookout for signs of that kind of issue)

Not to scare you but this was the sign of a tumor in my MIL collie. Get the vet to check her out, hope it's nothing serious

peppermintteagirl · 25/01/2023 17:54

Definitely get a vet check - could be a UTI, could be spay/old age incontinence, could be something else.

If it's incontinence there's two types of medication (Incurin and Propalin). My girl is on Incurin and it works perfectly.

No side effects unlike hormonal treatments.

Createausername1970 · 29/01/2023 00:58

Agree it could be Spey incontinence. My girl is 8 and started leaking overnight. She has been on Incurin for a couple of months. Started on on tablet a day for the first month, and have gradually been reducing it down, now on one every other day. No problems since 🙂
