What brand of food do you buy your dog?

What mid-range brand do you buy your dog, please?
And, if money was no object which brand would you go for?
I've always bought kibble, but was pondering the benefits (and challenges) of feeding raw. What are the pros and cons?
Many thanks.

We feed Nutriment raw, our dog is a rescue and wouldn't eat anything when we got so tried her with raw and she ate it, she eats anything and everything now but we've stuck with the raw.

Our previous rescue only ate pedigree chum tins, she lived to quite an age considering her past and had no health issues.

Better poos with the raw though!

Blueberry40 · 16/01/2023 21:11

Naturo wet food and Wainwrights dry food- our dog loves it. We tried butternut box for a while but it was very expensive!

MrsPnut · 16/01/2023 21:15

Pooch and Mutt or Barking Heads kibble and Forthglade wet. They also have cooked vegetables once a day.

Ddog has allergies, and three vet provided us with a list of foods he could have. He has Eukanuba dermatosis mixer and a couple of flavours of Lily's kitchen wet food.

Ilikewinter · 16/01/2023 21:17

Forthglade wet and he used to have Harringtons dry, until it seemed to sell out everywhere and he tried Tesco version of Harringtons....which he seems to much prefer 🙈

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 16/01/2023 21:19

Harringtons wet and dry.

I wouldn't change it as it suits him really well, he loves it and and he has nice firm poos 🤣

Jagley · 16/01/2023 21:22

Wainwrights wet and AVA dry, one dog has the sensitive tummy AVA and suits her really well.

I used this site and another to help me work out what to buy: www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/
I have a 6kg mini poodle, so the recommendations for her will differ from other dogs, ages, activities etc.

I order Gentle dog food online which is kibble which is cold pressed. I used to also feed butchers wet dog food, but my dog went off it. I now give her winalot with 1-2 cooked chicken thighs mixed in each day. Personally, I'd prefer to return to butchers which has better reviews, but apparently all dog food in the UK must pass certain standards.

I only vaguely looked into a raw diet as renovating, living in a static van in the garden with an undercounter fridge freezer- so other will know far more about it than me. I was put off by price, but also freezer storage of raw food and if we were to go on a holidays with the dog- trying to take along raw foods and have freezer/fridge to do so.

James Wellbeloved and Butternut delivered monthly.

hattie43 · 16/01/2023 21:33

Arden Grange and butternut box

We have a springer spaniel and struggled for months with finding a food that suited - she had consistently soft poos, often diarrhea.

We put her on Ci a few weeks ago, their Tickety Boo range which is fish only (we think she may be intolerant to chicken). It's been a revelation, perfect poos almost straight away and she loves it. Not a common one I think but it scores highly on All About Dog Food.

Costs about £36 a month and the service from the company is literally the best I've ever had, anywhere. They talked to me for 20 minutes about her when I called at 5pm on a Friday night, the problems we'd had with food, etc - they were so clearly knowledgeable about dogs and nutrition and genuinely interested.

Then they sent me a couple of kg worth of samples, totally free. When we ordered a sack online, it came with a free toy, hand written note and another couple of samples - and it arrived via dpd less than 24 hours after ordering online.

Would highly recommend.

Rescue dog rescued at six months, now 14.5 years old and fit and well for his age, no known health issues. We started him on Burns lamb kibble and he's still on it, sometimes with a bit of Chappie on top and table scraps. It suits his digestion and that's the main thing for me. So many people I walk dogs with spend a fortune on posh dog food and so many of their dogs have gut problems.

Youwhatnowbiggles · 16/01/2023 21:43

Canagan. Costs a lot - well, depending on your viewpoint…about £80 for a 12kg bag which lasts 2 or so months. Spaniel loves and seems to do v well on it.

Floralnomad · 16/01/2023 21:46

We feed Nature Diet wet , I think it’s very good value for what it is .

SpinningLikeAGirlInABrandNewDress · 16/01/2023 21:53

My pooch has a sensitive tummy and after trying several brands we found Lily's Kitchen to be great for her. There is always a discount code to be found too as it can be expensive. She gets a 150g pot of wet food for lunch and another for dinner and has kibble available at all times. Although she only eats the kibble last thing at night once all hope of chicken has gone lol.

SpinningLikeAGirlInABrandNewDress · 16/01/2023 21:55

Sorry meant to add we tried her on raw food but it did not agree with her at all. But know several people who swear by it, each dog is different I suppose.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 16/01/2023 22:31

Huntland cold pressed and forthglade trays. He was raw fed in foster but I don’t have the freezer space and the bacteria risk scares me.
we also go away a lot and needed something we could take in our van.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 16/01/2023 22:37

eukanuba dry food and winalot pouches in gravy. and once a week she'll get a dinner of leftovers from a roast.

She's nearly 19 and has never had any health problems (aside from slowing down with old age) so it's certainly suited her.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 16/01/2023 22:45

Butternut squash and alllll the human food that he can lay his paws on(he’s a lab after all!). He hates kibble.

ladygindiva · 16/01/2023 22:46

Virbac dry food for seniors. ( He's 12) when he turned about 9/10 everything seemed to give him a dicky tummy but he's right as rain on this.

Kastri · 16/01/2023 22:52

No Nasties by Paul O'grady/Burgess.Best food I have got.TMI but my dogs poo is solid all the time with no smell! She loves the food and it really agrees with her.Saw it in B and M and tried it because if he is endorsing it I knew it must be good and it is.

cyclamenqueen · 16/01/2023 22:56

Salters now on older dog but has always had salters and has. Ever really had any digestive problems or wind. Very glossy coat .

ilovesushi · 16/01/2023 23:02

We feed mainly wet food. Have never tried raw. Usually Naturo but occasionally tins of Dr Clauder which is more pricey though prices have stayed the same unlike lots of other brands. I only use kibble for scatter feeding which I'm not at the moment as our garden is like a bog with all the rain. I buy a whole variety of brands of kibble - carnilove, canagan, Dr Clauder. If money were no object I'd opt for Dr Clauder wet food everyday.

onelittleclara · 16/01/2023 23:47

Forthglade wet and Millie’s Wolfheart complete dry. Was on Nutriment raw till about 6 months old. Millies is not cheap but seems to produce better poos.

WetBandits · 17/01/2023 00:08

Another vote for Nutriment Raw plus raw, frozen sprats and various bits of offal. He has the odd tin of something when his food hasn’t defrosted in time and you can definitely tell when he hasn’t had his usual food because his farts and poo stink 🤮

Cats are on raw too and it’s given the two older ones a new lease of life!
