What brand of food do you buy your dog?

TheMidnightLibrary · 16/01/2023 21:02

What mid-range brand do you buy your dog, please?
And, if money was no object which brand would you go for?
I've always bought kibble, but was pondering the benefits (and challenges) of feeding raw. What are the pros and cons?
Many thanks.

I just googled Canagen. Gosh, they really are the M&S of the dog food world, aren't they? How will my poor old lad cope without hand-made treats baked in carbon-neutral wood-fired ovens? Or a diet based on what is thought the be the natural diet of wolves and wildcats? All I can see now is hipster blokes with beards putting baking trays of dog treats into pizza ovens while other manly men stoke them with logs. Very fashionable.

I'm sticking with good old Burns. It suits my dog and it's made 30 miles away from Welsh lamb free to frolic and graze on largely organic pasture.

At the moment Tails dry food for breakfast and Butternut for dinner. I have been using the Butternut food for about a month, prior to that I would batch cook some chicken rice and peas every few days.

Noeggsontoast · 20/01/2023 09:50

Two dogs of the same breed - one is raw fed, the other who has fibre responsive chronic enteropathy is on the naturo trays - rice based versions only to which we add physllium husk. When we're in France, we use Canagan which is the next best thing she does ok on. At the end of the day it's been about finding the right diet to suit each dog.

Started my 4 months pup on raw food, using Paleo Ridge.
So far so good.
He's been quite fussy since I have him and now runs to his bowl at meal time.

ilovesushi · 25/01/2023 18:51

@Mindymomo thanks for the code! Butternut Box is going down very well!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 25/01/2023 19:45

DAF raw. I've tried him with fancier raw like dogs butcher but he prefers cheap & cheerful DAF.
He'd like to eat tinned every day but I believe in raw benefits. I usually keep it frozen & defrost in microwave before each meal. Cat has some too.
When we go away he gets chappie or butchers, or perhaps as a treat human grade minced beef!
Supplement occasionally with yoghurt, eggs, sardines, sweet potato, carrot.
Prob works out about £40/month.

Barking Heads puppy kibble and Canaan wet food mixed together. He’s an 8 month old cockapoo.

mrsbrightside1308 · 25/01/2023 20:22

My lurcher is on greyhound and lurcher by burgess for dry food.and the 600g tins of natures menu country hunter for wet food as its high meat content.

Badger1970 · 25/01/2023 20:30

Mine are on Forthglade cold pressed kibble and Natures Menu Country Hunter sachets as a wet topper. 2 spaniels and currently costing me around £175 every 6 weeks. I had no idea of the cost now as it is all on subscription and creeping up slowly Shock

DD has just put her puppy onto Wolfworthy so I'm considering that next.

Hellohah · 25/01/2023 22:22

Mine is currently on Eukanuba puppy dry mixed with Forthglade trays.
He's approaching 1 though now, so I'm going to switch. We did try him on Millies Wolfheart but he didn't eat it. So we're going to try Wolfworthy and Butchers when we transition him off puppy food, both as good as you can get according to that allaboutdogfood site.

Vets advised us against feeding raw as he has a history of worms and I have cats (which means dead animals in the house).

Toddlingturtle · 27/01/2023 20:11

Lily’s kitchen wet and as much human food as he can get his hands on. Won’t touch kibble

bingohandjob · 29/01/2023 11:29

Guru - he LOVES it. We've tried a few others and he did adapt well to Markus Muhle which we used for a few months thinking we'd save some ££ but he did take some coaxing to eat it. We moved him back to Guru and he got his pre-dinner bounce back! He's in great, slim condition (black Labrador) beautiful coat, teeth in great condition, lovely temperament and regular, firm poos 👍

Butternut box for main meals plus a lunch of Arden Grange kibble with some salmon/chicken or egg mixed in. Plenty of leftovers too, he needs a huge amount of calories at the moment so it costs me loads!!

twitterexile · 29/01/2023 19:51

Another vote for Virbac here. Tried so many foods with ours but he has never looked better. Added bonus is that it is NOT grain free.

RunningFromInsanity · 29/01/2023 19:59

Skinners field & trial
(Working food so VAT free too)

Sherk · 29/01/2023 21:29

Life stage salmon and trout from Jollyes, topped with either Butcher’s tripe or a tin of mackerel / sardines for our greyhound.

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 29/01/2023 21:45

I make my pampered pooch rice, meat (turkey or beef mince) and frozen veg.

He won't touch commercial dog food.
Occasionally has a pouch of Felix As Good As Looks

GuyFawkesDay · 30/01/2023 20:10

That's a quick way to nutritional deficiencies making your own food like that.

Check with your vet what vitamins and minerals you need to add to balance your dogs diet.

thecapitalsunited · 30/01/2023 20:23

There’s an awful lot of ‘bro science’ that goes around about dog food with nothing to actually back it up. Allaboutdogfood looks great with lots of charts and numbers and data but the guy who runs it has a degree in zoology and not in nutrition so he’s not qualified to assess dog food. Also dogs are not wolves so don’t need to eat like wolves.

Find something that suits your wallet and your dog and don’t think too much about it. Dogs have been eating human leftovers for thousands of years, it isn’t going to make any difference whether they eat mechanically separated meat or hand diced venison which has been reared by angels and cooked by god himself.

NoLongerATeacher · 30/01/2023 20:24

I feed my two Macadams dry food - it is a bit more expensive but because it is so nutritionally good you don’t have to feed as much so works out the same.

Benjispruce4 · 30/01/2023 20:26

Aldi dry turkey and rice biscuits. 8 year old rescue, never had vet visit. Not about to change diet.

Benjispruce4 · 30/01/2023 20:26

She also has whole raw carrots and other cooked veg .

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/01/2023 20:46

Butchers Tripe tinned dog food.

He has the pet shop Jollies own kibble which suits him really well and his stomach is good on it.

Have tried loads of different combinations but these two suit him best.

Eight senior dogs all on raw, natural instinct and daf. Sardines, steamed veggies, quail eggs, bone broth.
