What brand of food do you buy your dog?

TheMidnightLibrary · 16/01/2023 21:02

What mid-range brand do you buy your dog, please?
And, if money was no object which brand would you go for?
I've always bought kibble, but was pondering the benefits (and challenges) of feeding raw. What are the pros and cons?
Many thanks.

My idea of mid-range is something like Skinner's Field and Trial. Ours get the kibble and with a bit of the wet food. I know a lot of dogs who do well on it.

Notplayingball · 17/01/2023 08:26

Dr John's.

LynneBenfield · 17/01/2023 08:30

My dog has Millie’s Wolfheart dry & Forthglade wet trays. Costs us a small fortune as he’s 36kg, but he enjoys them, they keep him in good shape and most importantly, he doesn’t have any tummy upsets or ear issues on them.

GlassBunion · 17/01/2023 08:41

Arden Grange dry and Harringtons trays.

Mmotherknowsbest · 17/01/2023 09:06

We feed prodog raw. It's the best raw food we have come across, the dogs love it, the tubs don't split in transit, and they poo solidly and it doesn't smell

Strawberrypicnic · 17/01/2023 09:25

We use Forthglade grain free complete wet meal. Used to mix with Harringtons kibble but we tried without and his digestion is so much better that now we just give the wet food. It's more expensive obviously (as we had to more than double the amount of wet food he gets per day) but the benefits are worth it (smaller firmer poos/no gas at all).

As mentioned above, allaboutdogfood is a great website.

Our previous dog was on food that cost us about £30 a month - harringtons dry food and half a tin of pedigree chum twice a day.

She was a bog standard cross breed, who I assumed would live forever, but she died suddenly on the day she turned 12, turns out she had a huge tumour in her stomach, the first we knew of it was on the day she died.

This time round I've tried to be more conscientious with what I feed our 8 months old puppy - I did look in to raw feeding but was concerned that with the current price hikes for general day to day living I wouldn't be able to afford it in the long term, so chose a high value kibble from the above website. I also get guidance of treats from there too.

He's 24kg currently, and I'd say his food costs £75 ish a month. That will go down when he's no longer on puppy food.

My dog had a very sensitive stomach and we used to feed her Burns dried food until she suddenly decided she didn't like it any more other well known brands like James Wellbeloved and Eukanuba used to give her very smelly wind! We were recommended Chappie and it seemed to suit her well and she absolutely loved it!

OrlandointheWilderness · 17/01/2023 10:41

Skinners field and trial for my working dogs. My DP has his gundog on canagans due to a ridiculously sensitive stomach.

TheMidnightLibrary · 17/01/2023 11:11

Thank you, everyone. The website is really useful for comparing.
With raw, I am concerned about forgetting to defrost the food and how flexible it is with going away, but it seems to come out well, nutritionally.

Millies wolfheart. Not cheap but the closest kibble alternative to raw feeding and my dogs look fantastic on it.

TheVanguardSix · 17/01/2023 11:24

My dog is classed as a senior now, bless him.
He ate AATU kibble for years but honestly, it's so expensive now and in the past year, it's started to upset him, giving him a runny bottom (sorry). He began leaving it in his bowl (after years of loving it, he just got tired of it).
So, both reasons were good enough to make the switch to not only a cheaper food (which he happens to absolutely LOVE) but a good quality one: Iams Senior kibble. It's not phenomenal quality like AATU, but it's very good quality, it really agrees with him, and he loves it, laps it up, and gets really excited about his feed now. And his poos are lovely and solid/totally unsmelly since the switch to Iams.

I pay around £27 for a 12kg bag of Iams.
AATU was costing me about £70 for a 10kg bag.

I do give him Naturo wet trays too, once in a while, just to change things up. They're decently priced, not smelly, and well made, plus my dog loves Naturo.

Honey's raw. I took them off for a while and spent the time switching endlessly to try to find something that didn't give the puppy (9 months now) soft, runny poos with no success. Butternut Box was ok but not amazing. Back to Honey's and all is well.

It was probably her teeth that put her off dried food. They need to be able to crunch it and once their teeth start causing pain they tend to prefer wet food. I like Chappie, it doesn't stink like so many wet foods. Supposed to be very good for dogs with stomach upsets.

Pseudonamed · 17/01/2023 12:23

Royal canin for yorkshire terriers. We have three dogs, none of which are yorkies but they love this. No wet food at all.

Lordofmyflies · 17/01/2023 13:16

Butternut Box - Costs about £10 a week. Lovely condition and small firm poos.

bunnygeek · 17/01/2023 13:34

I have a Chihuahua mix, only had her really for 4 weeks now. She came to us on Naturo wet food, and seems happy with that. She hated whatever dry food they had her on (apparently insect based but the dog she lived with was far more sensitive than her), so am now trying her on the Burns Toy/Small breed kibble as a supplement. She's a pretty robust little thing and new foods don't seem to rattle her. Wasn't tempted by raw for her, it seems like a lot of hassle to get right.

Mindymomo · 17/01/2023 13:34

I feed Butternut Box, my border collie loves it, it’s the nearest to homecooked I can find that’s not too expensive. If anyone wants to try some half price, here’s my referral code butternutbox.com/Mandy460?share_source=copylink

I feed Royal Canin Labrador. I’m always thinking of changing as I’ve heard it’s not the best for the price but he looks really well on it. He also gets some fish either mackerel, sardines, tuna or some salmon in his dinner. Wet dog food seemed to make stomach upset, as does chicken.

TheKitchenWitch · 17/01/2023 15:43

Sardines with puffed rice, and Rinti pouches.
I've tried everything, including raw (not as much faff as I thought but way too expensive). Best was raw, worse has been the supposedly high-quality dry (appalling poos and farts on all of them) and anything tinned that doesn't look like actual meat.
So tinned sardines and Rinti filet pouches it is for now. She looks good on it, and it's an affordable solution.

Spanielsarepainless · 17/01/2023 17:19

Over the years, Chudleys, Skinners or currently our local farm shop own brand. Latest dog came to me on Royal Canin Labrador puppy but his poo was dreadful. Now on a salmon and rice kibble. Up to a point money is no object and the farm shop food is £28/12kg bag and I certainly wouldn't bother upgrading.

familyissues12345 · 18/01/2023 10:50

Ours has tribal soft meat and Canagan dried food. Both on the expensive side, but she's only a small dog so one tube of tribal covers her for 5 meals (twice a day) and a bag of Canagan lasts about 4 weeks
